Your personal sphere of influence:

The Institute of Church History, Christian Archaeology and Ecclesiastical Art is a sub-unit of the Faculty of Protestant Theology. The vacant position as university assistant (praedoc) serves to strengthen our teaching and research portfolio. We are looking for historically oriented Protestant theologians with a special interest in research questions from the period of Late Antiquity and a willingness to contribute to the editing of articles for the Zeitschrift für Antikes Christentum, preferably documented by an excellent Master's thesis in the field of church history.

Your future tasks:

You will play an active role in the research, teaching and administration of the Institute, i.e:

  • You will be involved in research projects and publications on early church history.
  • You will work on and complete your dissertation in Church History. We expect you to finalise your dissertation agreement within 6-12 months and present your topic at national and international conferences
  • You will contribute to the redaction of articles for the Zeitschrift für Antikes Christentum.
  • You will participate in doctoral seminars organised by the Institute and in events of the Vienna Doctoral School of Theology and Research on Religion.
  • You will hold independent lectures in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement on topics relating to church history.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed Master's degree in Protestant Theology or a corresponding teacher training programme with excellent grades in church history courses (the degree certificate must be available by the date of employment at the latest)
  • A keen interest in early church history, a willingness to attend and organise national and international conferences and to work in a team, and good IT user skills
  • Very good knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin as well as German and English
  • High interest in interdisciplinary exchange with neighbouring disciplines (history, philology, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the provisions of the collective agreement, namely on church history topics.

The duration of the contract is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to a total of 4 years if the employer does not submit a declaration of non-renewal within the first 12 months.
