The University

Monash University is a modern, global, research-intensive university, delivering education and research excellence in Australia and across the Indo-Pacific. Our vibrant and diverse community of 86,000 students, 17,000 staff, and more than 490,000 alumni are working together to create real change. We are embedded in the communities we serve with three international teaching locations, six campuses, and more than 100 partner universities.

The University’s Strategic Plan, Impact 2030, defines priorities and actions for the University for the next decade. We’re focused on making a positive impact on three of today's global challenges – climate change, geopolitical insecurity and thriving communities. Monash is ranked among the world’s top universities and is currently ranked 37th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025, 23rd in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2024, and 54th in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024. Our success reflects our commitment to fostering world-class research and teaching that supports our goals to be truly diverse, innovative and sustainable.

The Opportunity

Research is central to life at Monash and to the realisation of our ambitions. Driven by excellence, purpose and impact, we are pushing the boundaries of our research agenda internationally, expanding our capability, advancing our performance and delivering impact, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and driving a culture of excellence. Framed by Impact 2030, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President leads a cohesive approach, in true partnership with our faculties, campuses, centres and institutes, to inspire and support outstanding research, and to attract and retain the best people. From fundamental discovery through to mission-based research, our researchers are supported in maximising their potential to secure national, competitive, government, and industry funding. Our dynamic research infrastructure strategy supports the effective realisation of our programs.

The Person

We seek a visionary and innovative leader with a proven track record of delivering significant impact with a truly collaborative approach.  The successful candidate will have an international reputation, a distinguished record of leadership, and will have demonstrated success in driving performance across a research-intensive university of scale and complexity.

If you are driven to shape the future of research in a dynamic and technologically driven environment, we invite your interest.

Company

Change has been the driving force of Monash University’s growth and success for more than 60 years as we have strived to make a positive difference in the world, and it’s the foundation of our future as we redefine what it means to be a university.

Our Impact 2030 strategic plan charts the path for how we will actively contribute to addressing three key global challenges of the age – climate change, geopolitical security and thriving communities – through excellent research and education for the benefit of national and global communities.

We transform students into global citizens by providing an excellent and contemporary learning experience across our four Australian campuses, and our campuses in Malaysia and Indonesia. We have a major presence in India and China, and a significant centre and research foundation in Italy, and offer rich educational experiences including the Global Immersion Guarantee, which enable graduates to stand out in the employment market.

We harness the research and expertise of our global network of talent and campuses to produce tangible, real-world solutions and applications at the Monash Technology Precinct, where our ethos of change catalyses collaboration between researchers, infrastructure and industry, and drives innovation through commercial opportunities that deliver positive impact to human lives.

In our short history, we have skyrocketed through global university rankings and established ourselves consistently among the world's best tertiary institutions. We rank in the world’s top-50 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2024, QS Sustainability Rankings 2024, Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023 and US News and World Report (USNWR) Best Global Universities Rankings 2022-23.
