About us:

At the SODA lab, we care about the thoughtful use of data, from its collection and analysis to decision-making based on the available evidence. Our goal is to critically reflect on, interrogate and improve the use of data in social science research and beyond. SODA is part of the Munich Center of Machine Learning that unites leading researchers in Germany, to strengthen competence in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

We work together as a team of researchers from many different fields, and collaborate closely with colleagues from other institutions, with practitioners and policy-makers. Between us, we combine a multitude of backgrounds, varied experiences and different knowledge. We bring these to bear on a wide range of exciting projects, many of which have direct relevance to social issues.

As a team, we believe that diversity – in ages, abilities, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and perspectives – makes not only for a richer life together, but also for a better team outcome. We know that people do their best work when they feel like they belong, when they are valued as individuals and treated as peers. We value empathy and honesty, care for one another and the work we do. We try to foster a collegial and collaborative environment where everyone brings their full selves to work, knowing that they’ll be supported to succeed. We hope you’ll join us!

We are looking for you:

Junior Research Group Leader “Applied data analytics and AI for the public sector” (m/f/x) in Munich.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

Join us in transforming the public sector by harnessing the power of data. Lead innovative projects, forge strategic partnerships, and drive impactful initiatives that turn data into real-world benefits. Together, we can empower public sector professionals and deliver cutting-edge data solutions that make a tangible difference. To support the public sector in making better use of available data, and improving data workflows, people working within the public sector can either be empowered to do it themselves or be provided with solutions. We aim to do both. Our programs empower staff of the public sector (as done in ADA Bayern) and develop solutions by junior data scientists as part of the Data Science for Social Good program. We want you to lead on these existing projects and go beyond. Your main task is to identify joint projects with the public sector, scope them, execute them, and publish about the solutions you have created. This position is for you, if you want to leverage the latest research findings in projects that have a real-world impact, beyond contributing to the literature.

Your tasks will include the following:

  • Developing new partnerships, scoping and managing of projects with public administration and non-governmental organizations.
  • Connecting experts and developing networks inside and outside of academia to create something that matters to them.
  • Preparing training materials, recording video lectures, writing review papers and tutorials, disseminating knowledge.
  • Guiding and supervising students and team members in their research efforts.
  • Coordinating and co-delivering training programs, collecting feedback, evaluating the program’s effectiveness, and contributing to ongoing refinement and improvement efforts.
  • Presenting and discussing your work as an active member of the scientific community, for instance through conferences and publications.

Your qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching and openness to modern and interactive teaching methods.
  • Ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds (academics, public servants, students, …).
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field with an exemplary academic record and at least 2-3 years of postdoctoral research or industry experience.
  • Proven leadership and mentorship qualities to guide and inspire a research team, including the supervision of students and junior staff.
  • Expertise in designing, managing, and executing projects with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Full fluency in both German and English, with exceptional communication skills for effective dissemination of research findings both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and build partnerships with other departments or external institutions.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the capability to prioritize multiple tasks and adhere to project timelines.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive research environment that upholds ethical standards and promotes diversity.
  • Experience with statistical and object-oriented programming languages (R & Python)
  • Adept at presenting complex research results at conferences and workshops, and engaging with scientific and public communities for outreach purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and secure research funding through persuasive grant writing.
  • Willingness to travel for research dissemination and collaboration, as well as to contribute to university-level teaching and training activities.

Even if you don't check every box on this list, we encourage you to apply. Your drive and enthusiasm are what truly matter to us. Let's explore how your unique qualifications and strengths can contribute to our team's success.

  • The position offers a unique chance to become an integral part of the pivotal transformations occurring within the public sector.
  • Your workplace is situated in the heart of Munich, mere steps away from the English Garden, and is conveniently accessible via public transport.
  • The position is initially offered for three years with a possibility of extension.
  • Embrace the opportunity to be part of a dynamic, international, and intellectually stimulating academic community.
  • LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity, and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Also possible in a part-time capacity.
