AHURI conducts and disseminates high quality research on housing, homelessness and cities issues to inform the policies and practices of governments, industry, and the community and to stimulate debate in the broader Australian community.

The Institute’s premier activity is the National Housing Research Program managed through a network of universities across Australia. The National Housing Research Program is funded by the Australian Government, all state and territory governments, and the university partners. The Institute hosts the National Housing Conference, the Australian Homelessness Conference, and supports a range of events to engage the research and policy communities. Beyond this the Institute also delivers a range of professional research services for a diversity of clients across the themes of housing, homelessness, First Nations housing and homelessness, and cities.

The position:

AHURI is seeking an experienced manager to undertake the role of Head of Research Program. This position reports directly to the Managing Director and regularly liaises with Research Centre Directors and Research Leads at each of our member universities as well as members of the AHURI Board.

The Team:

The Research Program team provides a range of research services including oversight, management and administration of the National Housing Research Program, support of AHURI’s professional services and support of AHURI’s marketing, communication and events.

Key Relationships:       AHURI Executive team and Board

                                        AHURI Research Centre Directors and Researchers

                                        Australian Federal and State Governments

Who we are looking for:

You are a motivated, detailed oriented team player with a commitment to providing excellent work. You are able to manage multiple stakeholders both internally and externally and communicate effectively to ensure the required outcomes and deadlines are met. You have an excellent understanding and experience of research processes from grant approval to peer review and publishing.

Duties and responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the position, in contributing to the overall leadership of AHURI, are:

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Research Program group
  • Provide corporate leadership for the company and strategic advice to the Managing Director on all company matters, including being an active member of the AHURI Executive team and representing AHURI to a range of high-level external stakeholders
  • Oversee the quality, relevance and cost effectiveness of the National Housing Research Program, the Institute’s premier research program
  • Act as the delegate for the Managing Director as and when required

Key competencies

  • Advanced degree (MA or PhD level) or equivalent experience.
  • Good understanding of research quality, methods and approaches including skills in research assessment and citation conventions.
  • Excellent writing skills with attention to detail and ability to write quickly, clearly and concisely for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to lead, manage and develop employees by undertaking regular performance reviews and appraisals and ensure compliance with all HR/IR requirements.
