The University of Southampton is committed to excellence in all we do, applying our insights and inventiveness to solve the most complex societal and environmental challenges. As a world-leading, research-intensive university, with a strong and high-quality educational offering, we are renowned for our innovation and enterprise and are within the top 1% of universities worldwide.

About the role:

Would you like to play a key role in supporting our enterprise activities, providing technical and administrative support to our GAU-Radioanalytical analytical laboratory and its external customers? If you are a confident and self-motivated individual who would like to join a dynamic and innovative team, we would like to hear from you.

You will have a skill level at least equivalent to achievement of NVQ2, GCSE or City and Guilds (ideally having studied chemistry or environmental science to Advanced or first degree level), and previous work experience within a technical support role in an analytical chemistry laboratory (preferably within a radioanalytical laboratory or similar). With experience of operating technical equipment and ability to carry out specialist testing, you will also need to be proactive with a flexible approach and have the ability to work with changing priorities during periods of pressured workload. Naturally, you will be able to build and maintain relationships with a variety of people across (and beyond) the University.

The role is varied, involving contributing to the day-to-day technical operation of the GAU-Radioanalytical laboratories, organising and carrying out a range of defined analytical tests/experiments/technical procedures, analysing test results and compiling information to create reports, and providing guidance and coaching to junior colleagues and students.

The expected hours of work for this full-time role are 9am - 5pm.

Please see the job description below for further details.

What we offer:

The GAU-Radioanalytical Laboratories, and this position, are based at the University of Southampton’s Waterfront Campus, at the seafront location of the National Oceanography Centre (Southampton).

We offer some fantastic benefits including generous annual leave (plus an additional 6 University closure days and bank holidays), company pension scheme, discounted private healthcare and dental, company sick pay, options for a degree of flexible working, excellent family leave arrangements, a wide variety of on and off-campus arts and culture facilities and access to a range of staff discounts and offers at local shops, restaurants and service providers.

We will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Pension Scheme, and subsidised health and fitness facilities. Furthermore, Southampton, at the centre of the south coast,  is a fantastic place in which to live, work and socialise – so regardless of what life stage you are at, you will find a dynamic and vibrant city that caters for all.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. We select candidates based on merit and ability and aspire to thrive in the diversity of our workforce. We welcome applications from all candidates with an interest in the role and those who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment.
