Among the many reasons to research and teach at the University of Vienna there is one in particular, which has convinced around 7,500 academic staff members so far. They see themselves as personalities who need space for continuous striving for top international research and scientific excellence. At the same time they enjoy support and liberties that are not a given at other institutions. Does that sound like something for you? Welcome to our team!

Your personal sphere of play:

Your future position is at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research in the Biodiversity Dynamics and Conservation Group, a team of about 20 persons. Our group studies patterns of biodiversity and biodiversity change at various spatial and temporal scales, with a particular focus on the consequences of human-driven environmental change, especially climate and land use change. Our model systems are mainly vascular plants, but also include other taxonomic groups. We apply a range of statistical methods to existing datasets or to data collected by own field observations and experiments. In addition, we have a focus on the development and application of predictive models of species’ range dynamics. For more information please see

We are currently offering a two-year post-doc position (temporary replacement, until 30/09/2026). The successful candidate should further develop, implement and apply the species migration model CATS (see Doi: 10.1111/2041-210X.14180) towards a multispecies-framework to simulate the simultaneous spatio-temporal dynamics of entire biological communities. In addition, they should help with efficient approaches towards computationally intensive ecological analysis. We expect a candidate with a strong background in C-programming and experience in modelling spatially explicit plant population dynamics.

The Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research is part of the faculty of Life Sciences with 10,000 students and a highly international team of > 1000 employees

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Good knowledge of linear algebra
  • Advanced programming skills, especially in C
  • Experience with spatially explicit modelling of plant population dynamcis
