The Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN PALEOMAGNETISM for a two years fixed-term employment starting August 2024 or as agreed. Position is placed in Solid Earth Geophysics laboratory.

Position description

We seek to attract a motivated individual to join our team as a postdoctoral researcher in paleomagnetism. This position offers an opportunity to conduct research in paleomagnetism and rock magnetism to address research questions in the Earth science, particularly supercontinent cycles. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to both paleomagnetic and environmental magnetic research and managing the Solid earth geophysics laboratory of the University of Helsinki. Supervision and mentoring of diverse graduate and undergraduate students will be expected in this role.

Postdoctoral training at University of Helsinki takes place in a rich scholarly environment involving interaction with faculty, staff scientists, postdocs, and students of the Department of the Geosciences and Geography. Applicants must have received the doctorate degree by the time of application. Preferred start date is August 1, 2024; other start dates are possible by mutual agreement. The appointment is for two years and there will be normal six-month trial period.


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Candidate must possess Ph.D. in geophysics, geology, Earth sciences, or a related field, with a focus on paleomagnetism and rock magnetism.
  • Strong background and experience in paleomagnetic laboratory procedure and maintenance
  • Commitment to teaching, mentoring and research training at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Salary and benefits

The starting salary of postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3700-3900 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience.
