  • oversee the handling and prioritisation of media enquiries
  • assist the Media and PR Advisers to repurpose and place stories on the relevant section of the University's website including sourcing photos and video as relevant
  • assist with the production and editing of impactful and easy-to-understand media releases, stories and other content based on often complex research, ensuring alignment with portfolio-specific strategies, media activities and campaigns
  • actively manage and maintain relationships with relevant journalists in Australia and internationally to promote portfolio-specific objectives.

About you

  • a strong ability to deal with complex ideas in science and translate them to media-accessible stories
  • experience in communication across all media types, integrated media and/or public relations campaigns
  • demonstrated experience pitching to the media and obtaining coverage, with a strong understanding of how the news cycle works and how media and its audience is changing
  • proven stakeholder management skills and the ability to build relationships with media and research academics
  • highly developed written and oral communication skills with experience in writing reports
  • relevant IT skills in online publishing, media distribution and engaging with relevant audience.

While the role will focus on Science (principally the Faculty of Science and Sydney Nano) the Media and Public Relations team at the University pitches in to assist all members in their work. From time to time, team managers might need to transfer the portfolio responsibilities of this position based on workload or business needs.
