Position overview

Based in the nation’s capital, the ANU is one of the world’s foremost research universities. The ANU College of Asia & the Pacific—within which CIW operates—has a long-standing reputation for outstanding research expertise and global policy impact, hosting the largest collection of expertise on the Asia Pacific in the English-speaking world. For over 70 years, ANU Sinologists have pioneered new fields in China studies and led the world in understanding Chinese societies. China expertise at ANU is housed in several academic departments across the College and elsewhere in the University, and is brought together by the CIW, which reflects the University’s and the Australian government’s commitment to deepening Australia’s understanding of and engagement with China.

CIW is now seeking one Postdoctoral Fellow. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research on the Chinese world that deepens our understanding of the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, or the Chinese diaspora, preferably with broad knowledge base of contemporary Chinese politics and society.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be a member of CIW, which is the hub for China Studies across the ANU campus. They will also have a formal attachment to one of the University’s Colleges, appropriate for their discipline and research expertise.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate, or be close to completion of a PhD, in a relevant field. Applicants should have a track record of fieldwork and the ability to undertake research using Mandarin Chinese, where these qualities are relevant to the area of research.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching programs during their tenure. This includes, but is not limited to, CIW’s executive education courses and in-country study programs.

The successful candidates will have access to funding for conference travel and research support. They will also have opportunities to access national and international networks of scholars through the regular programs of conferences, seminars and visits to the ANU, as a means of a broader contribution to public engagement.

This position is a 3-year fixed-term appointment.
