The Position

The Research Software Engineer will be based at the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES), ANU College of Science. The position will focus on supporting the endeavours of the Computational & Observational Geodynamics and Groundwater research groups, and will be supervised by Professor Rhodri Davies (Computational & Observational Geodynamics) and Dr Sia Ghelichkhan (Groundwater). The successful candidate will also work closely with software developers (nationally and internationally) from the G-ADOPT development team, and staff at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), based at the ANU. The Software Engineers will be expected to work collegially, leading by example to develop and maintain effective, productive, and beneficial workplace relationships within the all-academic and professional School and College staff, students and honorary appointees, as well as with industry stakeholders. 

The Research Software Engineer will be a member of Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES). RSES is Australia’s leading academic research institution for Earth and Marine Sciences, and ranked 11th in the world for Earth and Marine Sciences (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023). The Person

The candidate requires postgraduate qualifications or progress towards a postgraduate degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, Earth sciences or a related area or extensive experience (more than three years) in software development in a scientific environment or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training. Experience with finite element and/or finite volume methods is highly desirable, as is experience with Firedrake and/or PETSc. Your ability to lead by example, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, will enable you to foster respectful and productive working relationships with staff, students and colleagues at all levels within RSES in line with the RSES Culture Statement.
