Phd Candidate In Thermomechanical Evaluation Of Insulation Systems For Liquid Hydrogen Tanks

About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The position is part of the EU project NICOLHy. The project aims to develop novel insulation concepts based on Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP) that enable the safe, cost- and energy efficient storage of large quantities of liquid hydrogen LH2. New design concepts are needed because the current technologies used in small and medium storages today are not suitable for up-scaling, they would imply prohibitive costs, long construction time, low failure tolerance and limitation on tank shape selection.

We are looking for you to develop hydrogen tanks equipped with the novel insulation systems and to perform thermomechanical evaluation of the insulation systems. Modelling of the thermal and mechanical performance of different design concepts will be required. Modelling will be largely based on Finite Element Analysis FEA and multiphysics simulations. Some experimental work will be performed to check the validity of the models.

The project will accelerate the integration of hydrogen into the European energy economy and industry, which is necessary to be in line with the European Green Deal and to keep confidence of the population in the policy and the technology.

The development will be done in cooperation with research institutes and universities in Germany, Greece, Italy and Norway. NTNU will focus on the conceptual design of the tank, some detailed concepts and the thermomechanical evaluation of tanks equipped with the novel insulation system.

Your immediate leader is Professor.

Duties of the position

  • take part in the mandatory PhD research education programme
  • write and defend a PhD thesis
  • explore creative novel solutions by finding suitable materials and construction principles
  • become familiar with the technology of storage tanks and their insulation systems
  • model the mechanical and thermal behavior of insulation for hydrogen storage tanks
  • participate in project meetings at the European partners and present your work

Required selection criteria

  • you must have a professionally relevant background in mechanical, materials or civil engineering or physics
  • your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • you must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
  • you must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
  • documented analytical and modeling skills
  • good written and oral English language skills

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

The candidate should have experience with several of the following subjects:

  • finite element modelling
  • creep, temperature and rate dependent properties
  • thermodynamics, kinetics, heat flow
  • fatigue, fracture mechanics, dynamic analysis of structures and buckling
  • composite laminate theory, progressive failure analysis
  • programming skills, e.g. be familiar with programming in Python

Personal characteristics

  • motivated and ambitious
  • creative and experimental
  • good team player
  • able to work independently
  • proficiency to carry out goal-oriented work
  • good oral and written presentations skills

Emphasis will be placed on personal and interpersonal qualities.
