The Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin – Berlin Institute for Advanced Study, funded by the city of Berlin and the German federal government, annually invites about 45 outstanding scholars and scientists of diverse nationalities and disciplines as Fellows for research stays in Berlin. The Kolleg aims to offer Fellows maximum freedom and optimal conditions for the pursuit of their own research projects and the fertile exchange of ideas with other Fellows and the broader scientific and scholarly community of Berlin. The Kolleg’s campus in Berlin’s Grunewald district consists of several historical buildings housing a library, a restaurant, rooms for events, as well as offices and apartments for the Fellows.

Effective September 1, 2026, the Wissenschaftskolleg seeks a

Rector (f/m/d)

The Rector is charged with the academic leadership of the Kolleg, as well as with the identification and appointment of Fellows, the promotion of interdisciplinary dialogue, and the representation of the Kolleg to its sponsors, other learned institutions, and the general public, both domestically and internationally.

The position of the Rector requires demonstrated leadership qualities and experience in research management, excellence in scholarship or science, international recognition and networks, and experience in interdisciplinary work. Candidates should possess the ability and motivation to lead one of the most prestigious institutes for advanced study in the world, to advance existing strategies for success, and to contribute to the national and international visibility of the institute within the world’s research landscape.

Your tasks:

  • selection and appointment of Fellows with the support of the Permanent Fellows and the Academic Advisory Board
  • development of the working guidelines for and the shaping of the academic program, possibly with your own focus
  • advocating for the Ernst Reuter Foundation for Advanced Study and the association Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin e.V. – Institute for Advanced Study Berlin in the Members’ Assembly, which represents other prominent research organizations and sponsors
  • representing the Kolleg and its interests in the local, national, and international spheres of research politics
  • management of the Kolleg in close collaboration with the General Secretary (managing director) and in agreement with the funders

Your profile:

  • recognized academic excellence and high visibility in the international scientific community
  • experience in leading large-scale, interdisciplinary academic institutions
  • ability to integrate and mediate among researchers with diverse disciplinary and cultural backgrounds
  • negotiating skills, networking competence and diplomatic tact
  • very good knowledge of German and English
  • knowledge of Germany’s research landscape is desirable, but applications from candidates of all nationalities and disciplinary specialties are welcome
