The School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton welcomes applications for a lectureship to complement the School’s computational and digital expertise. The successful candidate will strengthen our thriving research culture within the triple helix strategy of the University, which emphasises cross-fertilisation between research, education and enterprise. Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and a top 15 UK research-intensive university.

Research areas of interest include:

  • Computational chemistry for biological, environmental, molecular or materials systems
  • Reaction pathways and dynamics
  • Fundamental theory in quantum chemistry and molecular simulations
  • Chemical informatics and big data
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to chemistry problems

About the role

You will build an internationally recognised independent research programme. You will contribute to the School of Chemistry in a leadership, research, enterprise and educational capacity. Education contributions may be within our Chemistry and/or Chemical Engineering programmes.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Clear plans to build an ambitious independent research programme.
  • Potential to raise external research funding from UK research councils, EU, charities and industry.
  • An ability to inspire and support students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion.

What we can offer you

  • A collegiate research-led School.
  • A collaborative and enterprising culture across the School and University.
  • Free access to sector-leading high performance computing (Iridis 6 25,000 AMD cores from 2024; Iridis 5 will run alongside) and a university commitment to maintain that sector-leading position (Iridis 7 is in planning).

The University values diversity and equality, and we actively encourage applications from under-represented groups. We are holders of the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award 2022, and institutional and departmental Athena SWAN silver awards. We recognise that employees may need working patterns that fit with caring responsibilities. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.

Interviews will take place in person in Southampton, which is an hour from central London by train and has an international airport alongside beautiful surroundings on the south coast and in the New Forest. Find out more about the University and city here.

If you need advice about your suitability to the posts, you are encouraged to contact the Head of the Computational section, Professor Jeremy Frey, for further details.
