The Department and Role Purpose

The Department of Biosciences is composed of academic staff and research fellows with research and teaching interests that span the broad spectrum of the Biosciences. The Department studies biology from the smallest to the largest scales; from the structures and functions of biological molecules, through to cells, tissues and organisms and to the entire global ecosystem. The interests of academic staff include all types of living organisms, from bacteria, through the plant and animal kingdoms, to human health and disease.

The primary role is overseeing technical services in the Department of Biosciences. Technical services includes the management of teams that are responsible for:

  • provision of laboratory-based teaching and research,
  • compliance of the Department with Health and Safety regulations in association with the relevant Department and University Health and Safety Officers,
  • maintenance of the fabric of the Department, its central equipment and plant in association with other University Departments including Estates and Facilities and
  • delivery of technical services.

The post holder will manage Health & Safety and equipment and plant in the Faculty's Life Science Support Unit. The role involves delivery of the Department's strategic teaching and research objectives by proactively leading and providing technical services teams that are robust, efficient, and cost effective, in an environment that is conducive to flexible working, and adapting the service to meet the users' needs and identifying ways of improving standards.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications/Experience

  1. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
  2. Masters / PhD in a relevant discipline (or equivalent experience).
  3. Professional practitioner with specialist knowledge and expertise to influence service delivery and activities within the organisation.
  4. Experience of participating in networks to share and discuss good practice and develop strong and productive working relationships.
  5. Experience of implementing policies and procedures and supporting service improvements.
  6. Expert knowledge and expertise in multiple areas of technical specialism, and the application of advanced skills to create, build, construct, analyse and realise new and innovative resources, equipment and research outputs.
  7. Experienced practitioner who has led teaching/research project working within an educational, commercial or industrial environment.
  8. Experience of providing specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues.
  9. Track record of management and development experience across a large technical service team or teams.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  1. Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  2. Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps.
  3. Achievement of recognised industry and professional standards supported by relevant courses or certifications.
  4. Committed to continuing professional development to maintain professional recognition.
  5. Ability to solve problems and decide on and plan appropriate solutions.
  6. Ability to contribute to planning at operational and strategic levels.
  7. Extensive knowledge and experience of ensuring compliance with regulatory and organisational policy and guidelines.
  8. Ability to teach or train others with specific technical skills, and the operation of standard and complex scientific, technical and creative equipment.
