Job description

The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences seeks to appoint an experienced technician to support cutting-edge research and training activities in Surgical & Interventional Engineering. The post holder is a member of the School’s professional services team, providing high quality technical support and specific support to education/ research activities.

The School is an innovative and dynamic academic environment that recently opened new facilities pivotal in the delivery of cutting-edge medical technology to clinical practice. These include manufacturing, robotics integration and optics workshops, a mock operating theatre suitable for post-mortem evaluation and a clean room. They are used to produce and evaluate novel surgical tools, computer-assisted interventions and implanted devices that are being tested prior to first-in-patient studies. 

The post holder will manage and be responsible for the smooth running of the new powder 3D printing facility which produce metal and plastic components and other 3D printers within the department. The post holder will also support and contribute to the design and implementation of surgical/robotics engineering research experiments that require technical workshop expertise, as well as work closely with the workshop manager to ensure the smooth running of all engineering workshops within School of Biomedical Engineering. Additionally, the post will support to simulated surgical procedures in the mock operative theatre; lab event set-up, execution, and clean-up; inventory, equipment, and facility maintenance; and lab policy and protocol development and implementation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Lead on our 3D (Powder) printing facility & technologies, which include titanium selective laser melting and nylon selective laser sintering.  
  • Contributing to the engineering manufacturing output of the workshops by running and supporting processes, to mention a few: CNC machining, material testing, silicone and silicone moulding, operating general workshop equipment, laser cutting machine, etc 
  • Provide training for researchers in the use of specialist equipment as needed and at times, assist researchers with experiments in areas where the post holder has specific and relevant expertise. 
  • Liaise with Estates and Buildings regarding laboratory infrastructure and services to ensure prompt and efficient repair/maintenance.
  • Ordering necessary tool sets, stock materials, spare parts for the functioning of the workshops and related facilities.  
  • Providing practical assistance and guidance as needed throughout the execution of the lab events, teaching and training. 
  • Equipment upkeep, maintenance and equipment management, and general laboratory housekeeping duties such as regular cleaning. 
  • Monitoring lab equipment for calibration and/or repair as needed. 
  • Provide Health and Safety inductions to new starters, manage users card access and ensure the users follow the general and local rules, from PPE to room access and safety. 
  • Maintaining a safe, productive, and clean facilities, following all safety regulations and local policies, including the collection and processing of hazardous waste. 
  • Following written processes and procedures that outline compliance with all relevant standards and regulations. Working with management to establish new SOPs 
  • Ensuring that laboratory/Workshop users follow relevant safety policies, guidelines, and regulations (e.g., HTA, COSHH, Local rule, Risk Assessments) 
  • Training, monitoring, equipment records (lasers inventory) and reporting on internal compliance with such policies and procedures 
  • Acting as coordinating liaison with vendors, fostering good supplier relationships and consistent specimen availability. 
  • Ordering, receiving, handling, storing, and disposing of substances and parts in compliance with regulations and local policies 
  • Managing consumables and stock inventory in line with upcoming events and course requirements, including personal protective equipment.  
  • Monitoring the use of the facilities and the need for equipment and space, contribute to the overall improvement of the facilities  
  • Identifying and communicating needs for additional instruments, equipment, and staff based on event requirements and user feedback. 
  • Support to the departmental surgical simulation facilities.  
  • Provide Technical Support to the STM and wider school as and when needed. 
  • Foster good working relationships and collaborations with other workshops.  
  • Responsible for development and support of junior technical staff  
  • Responsible for overseeing maintenance contracts for relevant equipment and operational agreements with the Trust and other external services regarding the engineering workshops.  
  • Arrange cover for technical staff to ensure on-site presence during working hours and events. 

The post holder will work closely with the Engineering Workshop Manager, engineering academics and will report to the School Technical Manager. 

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 2 years.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth knowledge of technical or scientific practices, methods and procedures gained through experience and/or formal qualification.  
  • Be responsible for the delivery and day-to-day management of a range of technical services, ensuring an efficient use of resources. 
  • Manage/ supervise the installation, maintenance and security of equipment, systems and software, with control over service budgets, stocks/stores equipment and supplies. 
  • Be responsible for the compliance with Health & Safety and other relevant regulations, guidance and legislation governing the service, monitoring safe working practice, completing risk assessments to inform actions and ensure a safe and environmentally sustainable workplace. 
  • Report accidents/ incidents and participate in accident investigations where appropriate. 
  • Communicate, both orally and in writing, complex information in a clear and precise way. 
  • Use well-developed analytical skills to identify trends and patterns, using appropriate techniques and procedures to inform decisions 
  • Use a systematic and timely approach to solve problems that have a moderate impact on the service of potentially up to a year making decisions independently using agreed guidelines. 
  • Manage own workload, pattern of work and resources, based on an agreed work plan. 
  • Manage/supervise a small team, advising and providing feedback and identifying training and development needs. 
  • Demonstrate leadership and innovation in the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices, recording progress through the King’s sustainability audit process and sharing good practice. Nurture and encourage sustainable practices and leadership within your team and networks. 
  • Adapt local procedures to improve the service to meet the needs of the users. 
  • Be responsive to changing priorities and an evolving environment/context, maximising the efficiency of the technical support being provided.  
  • Forge relationships with colleagues in the university and externally, to build relationships, disseminate and get information, coordinate and deliver the service 
  • Provide advice/ guidance and, where appropriate, training to colleagues on techniques, university policies, processes and, where required, source information and support for colleagues to facilitate their work 
  • Work with colleagues and network within and beyond King’s 
  • Actively engage in the King’s Technical Network, building a network across the Faculty to provide peer support and opportunities to share best practice 
  • Facilitate an inclusive culture and ethos working with academic, research and other professional services staff and colleagues external to King’s  
  • Participate in cross-School/ Faculty/ university projects and initiatives for up to 10% FTE 
  • Engage actively in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives, in line with the Technician Commitment and Research Concordat for a minimum of 10 days pro rata per year
  • Be responsible for delivery and day to day management of the 3D powder printing room and other 3D printing needs of BMEIS. 
  • Support the workshop manager with day to day running of the Engineering workshops and SIE: Inductions, equipment maintenance, train users on equipment and procedures, operate various workshop machineries, H&S monitoring, order and maintain stocks, contribute to facility maintenance(raising maintenance/IT team tickets) 
  • Workshops supervising/monitoring, hardware manufacturing support(CNC machining, general workshop machineries), health and safety.  
  • Support to the departmental surgical simulation facilities.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  1. Minimum level 4 qualification, e.g., higher apprenticeship, HNC or other Level 4 award, plus work experience in a relevant technical/scientific post OR Considerable knowledge and skills gained through work experience in a relevant technical or scientific post. 
  2. Evidence of an active commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSci, or working towards CSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs. 
  3. Extensive technical experience and knowledge of a range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and their environmental impact. 
  4. Good working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.  
  5. Solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent planning and analytical skills, able to manage competing priorities and work with minimal supervision. 
  6. Clear spoken and written communication skills, with proficient computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills. 
  7. Proactive and responsive to contacts in immediate area, across the wider organisation and externally (e.g., suppliers, colleagues in other HE institutions) to build relationships and network. 
  8. A commitment to a positive research culture and concern for staff and student wellbeing, along with a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. 
  9. Good computer skills including Microsoft office packages and 3D modeling software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360) 
  10. Experience with various manual and automated workshop manufacturing processes, such as 3D printing, manual and CNC machining.  

Desirable criteria

  1. 3D printing expertise, particularly with metal or plastic printers, as well as the ability to operate and maintain a variety of other 3D printers. 
  2. Previous experience working within Engineering Workshops/Facilities or Managing Facilities. 
  3. Able and willing to work indirectly adjacent to a cadaver facilities and/or support waste stream activities that may lead from such facilities. 
  4. Knowledge of techniques and equipment associated with surgical & interventional engineering research. 
  5. Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required
