FACULTY OF ARTS

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSLATION, INTERPRETING AND INTERCULTURAL STUDIES

The Department was first established as the ‘Translation Programme' in 1990 and was awarded full independent departmental status in 2019. During our 33-year history, we have built a reputation as a leading centre for teaching and research in Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies. The Department offers teaching at BA, MA and Research Postgraduate levels and is among the most internationalized in the region, with an academic team currently comprising members from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Spain, North Macedonia, the UK and Australia. The Department has particular strengths in translation technology, interpreting, intercultural and minority studies, and online and collaborative translation. In the 2020 Research Assessment Exercise it was judged world-leading in research environment and research impact and top among translation units of assessment for the overall percentage of 4* rankings.

Assistant Professor/Associate Professor (two positions) (PR0337/23-24)

The Department is now seeking applications for the above positions.

Responsibilities:

  1. Applicants for the first position should be lab-ready, focused on the area of global translation technology in the English-language medium, AI-informed and capable of aiming towards the transdisciplinary curriculum.
  2. For the second position, applicants from all areas of the discipline will be considered, preference being given to those with expertise in at least one of the following areas:
    1. Translation technology and AI;
    2. Audiovisual translation (including modes of assistive audiovisual translation such as audio description);
    3. Conference or community interpreting;
    4. Intercultural studies, preferably with interests in minority cultures; and
    5. Crisis translation.

Applicants for both positions should display evidence of an active research programme including successful grant capture and/or having grant proposals ready for incubation. Given the Chinese/English orientation of the majority of the Department's course offerings, while not strictly required, a command of Chinese will be an advantage for both positions.

The appointees will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be expected to play an active role in research and publication. They will also be responsible for supervision of undergraduate honours projects and postgraduate dissertations at the master's and doctoral levels as appropriate. The appointees are also expected to take on administrative duties.

Requirements:

  • Possess a PhD in Translation, Interpreting, Intercultural Studies or other relevant fields; and
  • Have an appropriate research and publication record, as well as teaching experience at the tertiary level.

The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.

The remuneration package includes retirement/gratuity benefits, annual leave, medical and dental scheme, housing assistance and relocation allowance wherever appropriate.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Application Procedure:

Applicants are invited to submit their applications at the HKBU e-Recruitment System (https://jobs.hkbu.edu.hk). Applicants are requested to send in samples of publications, preferably the three best ones out of their most recent publications, and teaching evaluation results. Applicants should also request three referees to send in confidential letters of reference, with PR number (stated above) quoted on the letters, directly to the Personnel Office (Email: recruit@hkbu.edu.hk). Those who are not invited for interview 4 months after submission of application may consider their applications unsuccessful. All application materials including publication samples of scholarly/creative works will be disposed of after completion of the recruitment exercise unless otherwise requested. Details of the University's Personal Information Collection Statement can be found at https://hro.hkbu.edu.hk/en/worklife-at-hkbu/employee-favourable-environment.html#privacy-policy.

The University reserves the right not to make an appointment for the advertised post, and the appointment will be offered according to the terms and conditions applicable at the time of offer.

Review of applications is ongoing until the position is filled.
