The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as we seek to recruit one member of academic staff.

We are looking to appoint a highly qualified and inspirational lecturer in the field of Geotechnical Engineering with a collegiate approach and passion for teaching and research. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with research interests in the areas of energy geotechnics, foundation engineering, element testing of soil, or model testing.

  • The successful applicant will contribute to teaching of Geotechnics at undergraduate level (including design orientated modules) and at MSc level in their specialist area, in addition to contributing to the wider Civil and Environmental Engineering taught programmes.
  • They will join Geomechanics Research group and undertake cutting edge research resulting in world leading outputs. SAGE (Surrey Advanced Geotechnical Engineering) lab is part of Geomechanics Research group and houses advanced soil testing apparatus and model testing apparatus. Some examples of soil testing kit are Cyclic Triaxial, Resonant Column, Hollow Cylinder Apparatus, Cyclic Simple Shear.

We offer highly praised undergraduate (BEng/ MEng) programmes in Civil Engineering that stand out through their strong industry links and employability prospects, together with a suite of popular and innovative MSc degrees in both full-time, part-time and distance learning modes.

Research in the Department is organised into thematic groups comprising Air Quality, Geomechanics, Infrastructure Systems Engineering, and Water and Environmental Engineering. Our research in geotechnics includes liquefaction and dynamic soil-structure interaction of on/offshore structures, soil particle testing and characterisation, including inter-particle friction and contact modelling of irregular grains. Our offshore wind research has resulted in a successful spin-off company RENEW-RISK.

Together with the Centre for Environment and Sustainability the Department forms the School of Sustainability Civil and Environmental Engineering. The School formed part of a very successful REF 2021 return in Engineering, with 93% world leading or internationally excellent outputs.

About you

We are looking for applicants demonstrating the following essential skills and background:

  • In civil engineering and a research profile in geotechnics or soil-structure interaction.
  • Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field.
  • A growing record of high-quality publications and involvement in initiating and submitting grant applications.
  • Evidence of high-quality teaching or potential to achieve this.
