The Department of Political Economy (DPE) is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of climate adaptation policy, for a period of 10 months, starting on 1 March 2024 (1.0 FTE). The successful candidate will collaborate with Dr Francesca Pia Vantaggiato (DPE) and Dr James Porter (Geography) on a comparative assessment of climate adaptation measures adopted at local government level in the four nations of the UK. The successful candidate will be centrally involved in all aspects of the research, including research design, data collection and analysis, production of the research outputs, coordination and collaboration with partners and stakeholders, and writing external grant applications to extend the research.
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 10 months.
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.
- Design and conduct mixed-methods research to assess climate risks and vulnerabilities reported in local authority adaptation plans, strategies, and policies in the UK;
- Develop a method and/or dataset to compare and identify patterns over which climate risks and vulnerabilities are identified, prioritised, and managed by local authorities;
- Support the dissemination of project findings via co-authored research outputs in high-ranking international peer-reviewed journals, practitioners, and professional conferences.
- Prepare, write, and submit research grant(s) with the project leaders to UK research councils.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
1. A PhD in political science, public policy, geography, or any other relevant discipline;
2. Research experience in, and knowledge of the relevant literature of, one or more of the following areas: climate change adaptation governance; flood risk management; wildfire management; collaborative governance; local governance of climate change; environmental politics.
3. Methodological experience with quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis;
4. The ability to relate to, and support, collaborative research efforts;
5. The ability to communicate research clearly (both in oral and written form), and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a project team.
6. Experience submitting research grant proposals;
7. Experience conducting fieldwork in different nations of the UK.
8. Familiarity with the data infrastructures of central and local government in the UK (ONS, NOMIS, gov.uk etc).
9. Experience with using qualitative software such as NVivo;
10. Experience with quantitative software such as R, Stata etc.
Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
