Vice-Chancellor's Fellowship in Multidimensional Aspects of Health, Social Care and Education

We are seeking exceptional academic colleagues who have research plans which will have a remarkable impact on our disciplines and/or drive development of our Research Peaks, to join our Vice-Chancellor's Fellowship Scheme. 

As a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow, you will have a permanent academic role, and for the first three years you will be supported to undertake independent and collaborative research, delivering an agreed research plan to make a significant contribution to the research profile of the University. Nursing, Midwifery, and Health and Social Work, Education, and Community Wellbeing are large departments with multiple and diverse research strengths which form an integrated research ecosystem. They are currently located together on Northumbria University’s Coach Lane Campus northeast of Newcastle city centre. A multi-million pound investment will enable their move to our City Campus in 2027. Together with other, related research areas, they will form the Centre for Health and Social Equity (CHASE). The aim of CHASE is to develop and harness the University’s research, education and knowledge exchange expertise to help meet the health and social needs of multiple stakeholders and communities in the city, region and beyond.

The Centre will provide laboratories, teaching space and a community engagement zone, and is intended to house some of the University’s leading partnerships with national and international organisations.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) Northumbria University had the biggest rise in research power ranking of any UK university. Its research power ranking rose to 23rd place amongst UK universities. Together with our neighbour institutions in Newcastle and Durham, we now form the largest concentration of researchers outside London, creating a northern research powerhouse. The University’s largest submission, Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy (UoA 3), received top 4* rating for research environment and 8th ranking nationwide for research power. 

We are now seeking to further enrich our research by recruiting future research leaders within the wider area of multidimensional aspects of health, social care and education who will form passionate and dynamic members of the departments and of CHASE. Applicants with experience in community and service user engagement would be particularly welcome. Areas where we are particularly keen to recruit include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of long-term conditions
  • Implementation Science 
  • Social psychology
  • Public Health and complex interventions, including upstream interventions
  • Workforce organization and development
  • Community and service user engagement
  • Intersectoral impacts (including education, financial security, housing, climate, sport) on social determinants of health and equity
  • Education practice and educational achievement informed by quantitative methods

To be considered for this prestigious opportunity you must demonstrate academic excellence, evidenced through your role in the production of world-leading research outputs and have experience of winning grant funding (appropriate to discipline and career stage). In addition, you must demonstrate a clear research plan for the period of the Fellowship.
