Computer Science at Surrey has two thriving research groups, each with an international reputation for research: Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) and Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS). SCCS has five research themes: security and privacy; cryptography; verification; distributed systems; networked systems. SCCS members are active in at least one theme, with several working also across themes. SCCS is also leading a cross-cutting research activity on digital resilience. NICE focuses on advancing the foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Primarily, NICE investigates deep learning, as well as explainable/interpretable models, and extends their applicability to natural language processing, robotics, healthcare, and other areas.
