The new Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine Program at the University of Adelaide is committed to playing an integral role in the promotion of a sustainable clinical workforce in Australian healthcare. An essential element of this lies in early exposure to General Practice and Primary Health. In 2024, the Adelaide Medical School is enhancing the content, engagement, and profile of community based General Practice in the new medical degree by:

  • increasing community GP practice clinical placements earlier in medical student training
  • enabling medical student to train and work alongside experienced and expert GP clinicians and become part of Primary Health Care teams.
  • immersing third year medical students in General Practice as their first clinical involvement, before exposure to tertiary hospital medicine

To help achieve this goal, the Adelaide Medical School is recruiting for a Year 3 General Practice Placement Lead.  In this Lecturer role, you will provide critical support to both GP practices and students across both semester 1 and 2 of Year 3. This role will require a commitment of working on a Tuesday and Wednesday.

Duties include:

  • Provision of support to students while on GP placements;
  • Provision of support to GP practices across Adelaide (metro and outer metro)
  • Development of resources to support GP clinics in hosting students on placement;
  • Development and delivery of workplace based assessments for students while on GP placements;
  • Development and delivery of integrated teaching activities across all 4 domains defined by the Australian Medical Council (Health & Society, Professionalism and Leadership, Clinical Practice, Science & Scholarship);
  • Development and delivery of simulation activities to support students on GP placements.

You will also need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, as an essential aspect of this role will be to liaise with GP practices as well as other academics teaching into the program. Please note that due to timetabling restrictions, this role requires availability on both a Tuesday and Wednesday and is not flexible.

To be successful you will need:

  • Experience in working in Australia as a General Practitioner;
  • Demonstrated teaching experience at a tertiary level, including design and implementation of workplace based assessments;
  • Proven ability to contribute successfully to a multidisciplinary work environment, including excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team;
  • Familiarity with online learning management systems and information technologies to support student learning;
  • A student-focussed approach to education, including the ability to provide and respond to high-level feedback.
