The Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the research group of Professor Sirkku Juhola invite applications for the position of a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

Starting in date for this 2-year fully funded position is in February 2024, or as agreed with the candidate. There will be a trial period of six months in the beginning.

The position is a part of a FORMAS funded project in collaboration with Linköping University. The project titled “Seeing, Knowing and Acting in the Climate-Biodiversity Nexus – exploring digital technologies for transformative change”, led by Professor Sirkku Juhola. The project examines the double crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss on how to transform societies towards sustainability and how to govern such transformations. In this, growing expectations are placed on digital technologies to contribute to sustainability transformations by expanding our capacities to monitor, assess, visualize and govern the earth system and its interacting climatological, ecological, economic and social subsystems.


The position is based at the Ecology and Environment Research Programme, which belongs to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, and it is located in Viikki campus, ten kilometres from the Helsinki city centre.

The appointees will work as a part of the Urban Environmental Policy Group, a multidisciplinary research environment with focus on urban sustainability.

We look for a candidate in sustainability or environmental social sciences or a related field who:

  • Can lead a review on biodiversity and climate interlinkages in the urban context with a focus on digital technologies that aim to inform climate and biodiversity policy and action and critically assess selected digital arenas to establish what knowledge is included and how data is defined, assembled, selected, organized and visualized
  • Have high motivation for academic research
  • Have a doctoral degree that has been granted before the beginning of employment
  • Have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and work well in a group

Research questions can be adjusted according to applicants’ interests and skills.

The salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
