Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Civil Engineering.

We wish to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher with a strong background in machine learning and statistics. The successful candidate will work on the project GEOMETRIC (GEOphysics and Machine learning for Evaluating Transportation Infrastructure Condition). This project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, under the SFI National Challenge Fund Programme. This overall aim of the project is to develop an approach, using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) of fibre-optic cables, to enable real-time monitoring of transport infrastructure slopes. Current methods of data processing, analysis and interpretation are, however, inadequate for dealing with the large quantity of data generated using this approach, which could amount to Terabytes of information every month. In order to systematically analyse the data generated by DAS, we propose to develop an innovative approach using machine learning and deep learning algorithms.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

• to investigate the use of machine learning tools for assessing slope condition
• to optimize machine learning models and code to handle the large volume of data efficiently, ensuring scalability and real-time processing capabilities.
• to develop code necessary for automation of DAS data
• to collaborate with geoscientists and engineers to integrate DAS data with other sensor data sources for a comprehensive understanding of transportation infrastructure health.
• to assist with project management and liaise with industry partners and other stakeholders

Salary Range: €42,783 - €43,371 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
