The Widening Participation and Social Mobility Directorate (WPSM) has responsibility for meeting the ambitious targets of the University’s Access and Participation Plan (APP) which aims to improve the access, success, and progression of students from underrepresented groups and disadvantaged backgrounds.
We are seeking to appoint a Widening Participation Co-ordinator to join the Access team to contribute to the development and implementation of two of the University’s flagship Access programmes: Ignite your Journey (a sustained and sequential programme to provide application, mentoring and transition support to Year 12/13 students) and Ignite your Potential (a new project that will be aimed at Year 9-11 Care Experienced or Estranged young people).
The successful candidate will work in schools, colleges, and community settings, delivering impactful talks, workshops and information for post-16 students and their supporters, as part of our wider access activity. Responsibilities include planning, organisation and delivery support for both on-campus events and online activities and contributing to the creation of resources and materials designed to enhance our programmes.
The successful candidate will have experience working with young people and their supporters, demonstrating exceptional communication, event management, and relationship management skills. Experience in the creation and delivery of workshops, activities and talks is essential, as is knowledge of higher education landscape and the widening participation agenda.
We will consider applications from those who are interested in a part-time role (minimum 0.8 FTE). Please make sure you include your preference within the Additional Information section of your application.
The role is a secondment cover offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 31 July 2023. It will offer hybrid working from home and at our Highfield Campus, with travel to attend meetings and events with participating schools/colleges and partner organisations around Hampshire and the surrounding area. Some evening work is to be expected, along with occasional event delivery at weekends (at least once per half term).
WPSM is proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality of opportunity. We select candidates based on merit and ability and aspire to thrive in the diversity of our workforce. We welcome applications from all candidates with an interest in the role and those who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities.
If you would like to discuss the role in more detail please contact Emma Woozeer, Access Manager (E.Woozeer@soton.ac.uk).
An enhanced DBS check is required for this role.
