Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellow to join Professor Andrew Lotery’s vision science research group to undertake a leading role in a new EPSCR funded study “Private Eyes: Privacy-preserving Artificial Intelligence and Disease Progression Prediction for Patients with AMD”.
This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical ophthalmologist interested in developing their clinical research skills. The successful applicant will participate in grading retinal images as part of this project using artificial intelligence in diagnosing age related macular degeneration (AMD). This project will involve collaboration with leading computer scientists and allow an opportunity for the post-holder to develop a basic understanding of artificial intelligence methods. There will also be the opportunity to attend Professor Lotery’s medical retina clinics and participate in other clinical trials as a sub-investigator.
You will have MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) or an equivalent qualifications, and have previous ophthalmic experience working as a doctor. Experience of academic writing, participation on clinical trials and giving intravitreal injections would be an advantage but are not essential. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, capable of independent working and have excellent organisational and communication skills.
Andrew Lotery is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton. The Vision Sciences research group investigates the role of biomarkers in identifying the early stages of AMD. In addition, the wider group’s focus is on understanding the basic mechanisms of this disease so as to develop disease specific therapies in order to improve vision.
The employing organisation is the University of Southampton which offers a competitive salary, pension scheme and other benefits.
This is a 6 month, full time post offered as a fixed term contract, to start in February 2024.
A satisfactory DBS disclosure at Enhanced level is required for this post.
