About METRAMAT project 

We are looking for a PhD candidate for one of the ten PhD positions in METRAMAT project; a European Doctoral Network funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2022 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA). The main objective of METRAMAT Doctoral Network project is to actively train young researchers to become skilled in metamaterial development by researching and creating a combined set of design, simulation, manufacturing, testing, reliability assessment and integration tools that will strengthen the European manufacturing industry and lead to a sustainable society.

The manufacturing industry is fundamental to the technological sovereignty and competitiveness of the European economy. To maintain the leading position, the sector requires continuous innovations, exploring the limits of material properties. This is particularly the case in high-end technology applications, such as lithography machines and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) industry, where the limits of conventional materials come into sight. Metamaterials, built up from rationally, pre-designed architected substructures, hold the promise to outperform conventional materials and redefine the boundaries of industrial design practices. The metamaterial potential can drive the much-needed transformational changes in European manufacturing industry. However, the wide-spread use of metamaterials is hindered by the lack of knowledge of (i) design-for-production principles for metamaterials, (ii) integration at component and system level and (iii) design-for-reliability of metamaterials. METRAMAT will train and deliver 10 researchers skilled in metamaterial development by researching and creating a combined set of design, simulation, manufacturing, testing, reliability assessment and integration tools. The involvement of MEMS, lithography and additive manufacturing industries ensures that scientific training is tuned to existing industrial challenges requiring new fundamental solutions, such as positioning accuracy, sensor sensitivity or shielding of external vibrational disturbances, with emphasis on design for manufacturability and reliability. Together with the transferable skills training, secondments and network, this will provide the doctoral candidates a strong basis for a successful career in industry or academia. The new scientific insights, engineering tools and educational programs to be developed within METRAMAT program will pave the way to wide-spread manufacturing and application of metamaterials in European industry, elevating it to the next level.

Description of the PhD position

Objectives: Multi-scale assessment and understanding of mechanical and fatigue properties of metallic metamaterial structures produced in DC5 project, under uniaxial quasi-static, cyclic and vibrational loading conditions by microstructure sample characterization prior to the testing, in-situ during testing and post-mortem. Establishment of quantitative representation of design-fabrication-fatigue performance link and failure risk assessment procedures for metal 3D printed metamaterials.

Expected results: Understanding of the multi-scale deformation and failure mechanisms in metal 3D printed metamaterials under static, cyclic and vibrational loads. Qualitative and quantitative representation of design-fabrication-fatigue performance link. Fatigue properties in the form of life and strength to be used as input for theoretical failure prediction tools for optimization the metamaterial designs. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Planned secondments: Academic: KUL, 3 months, design and fabrication of samples in lab conditions; Industrial: KMWE, 3 months, design and fabrication of samples in industrial setting.

You will report to Associate Professor Nima Razavi.

Duties of the position

  • you will have experience with AM fabrication of lattice structures  
  • performing mechanical tests such as tensile, fracture and fatigue tests on lattice structures
  • microstructural analysis of the chosen alloys for fabrication of lattice structures
  • application of advanced damage detection methods for structural integrity assessment
  • application and development of novel local approaches for failure prediction
  • performing advanced numerical analysis with the aim of failure prediction

Required selection criteria

  • professionally relevant background within one or more of the following subject areas: Mechanical/civil/aerospace/processing/Industrial engineering, and/or Materials technology
  • your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at the master's level
  • you must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
  • you must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
  • excellent written and oral English skills
  • strong background on solid mechanics and mechanics of materials
  • excellent track record of academic achievement and a strong interest in conducting experimental and numerical research

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Preferred selection criteria

  • good knowledge and experience in mechanical testing of materials or components
  • experience in using Finite Element Codes such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, etc. for numerical analysis
  • understanding basic principles of additive manufacturing and how the process conditions may alter the quality of AM parts
  • the ability to conduct high quality research and publish results in acknowledged peer-reviewed journals is an asset
  • knowledge of metallography and material science would be given additional credit in evaluation

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

Recruited researchers can be of any nationality and must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent by the researcher as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not considered.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding from the Horizon 2022 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) for the METRAMAT project.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Selection process:

Recruitment Committee will select suitable candidates for a first round based on academic formation, professional and/or research experience, motivation and references. Selected candidates will be given a short assignment related to the topic of the project to evaluate analytical abilities and level of written English, followed by interviews.
