We are looking for a Research Technician in synthetic organic chemistry to join an international collaboration looking at the synthesis and properties of endohedral fullerenes. You will be based at the University of Southampton, one of the UK’s top research-intensive universities. Chemistry at Southampton has a national and international reputation for excellence with world-leading facilities.

Molecular surgery of endofullerenes is the process of using chemical reactions to open a hole in a fullerene cage, insert a small molecule or atom, and reform the original cage (e.g. Communications Chemistry 2022, 5, 121.). The resulting endofullerenes, such as methane inside C60, denoted CH4@C60 display remarkable physical properties which allow the investigation of fundamental quantum effects. You will work as part of a team to ensure that materials of the required quantity and purity are produced on the timeframe needed for the physical investigations. The work is synthetically challenging. Preparation of materials using our existing procedures is expected, but there is also the opportunity for original research. The compounds you make will be studied in a number of laboratories and facilities worldwide.  

Outstanding skills in practical synthetic organic chemistry, together with an enthusiasm for the project area and a strong interest in working as part of a collaborative and cross-disciplinary team are required. Experience of preparative and analytical techniques such as HPLC, and NMR are an advantage. You will have completed a degree in chemistry and further experience in synthetic organic chemistry is expected. You will have an excellent work ethic and commitment to achieve the project aims, as well as the ability to manage your time to deliver the required results. You will also be involved in general running and maintenance of the laboratory and are expected to adhere to our strict safety standards.
