The Department of Biology has a vacant permanent position as Associate Professor in biological oceanography with a focus on zooplankton ecology.
The hired person will be a member of the “Marine Sciences group” that has teaching and research activities within marine science and aquaculture. The department is host for the international study program “Master in Ocean Resources” (MSOCEAN), designed to give students a broad understanding of the complex interactions in the marine sector across fields of marine ecology and aquaculture. The hired person will be expected to contribute to the study in marine ecology of MSOCEAN, as well as teaching marine-related courses in the Bachelor’s program in Biology.
Marine ecology research topics of the Marine Science Group
The overarching aim of the Marine Sciences group is to perform excellent research and education in marine ecology and areas focused upon sustainable management, production, and utilization of biological marine resources. Significant research topics within marine ecology include marine ecophysiology, including primary production and macroalgal and benthic invertebrate ecology, predator-prey relationships, behavioral and evolutionary dynamics, fish, and marine mammal ecology, as well as use of bio-optics and bioacoustics for enhanced marine sensing.
The announced position will strengthen our academic and research activities in biological oceanography and marine ecology, with particular focus on zooplankton ecology. The successful candidate will be expected to work with in-situ observations of pelagic systems across any of the following areas: environment-organism dynamics, population or community dynamics, food web structuring, biological-physical coupling, or other relevant marine ecology topics. It is required that the new faculty member has a strong research profile covering different aspects of biological oceanography and marine ecology that is complementary to that of the current academic staff. In addition, possible synergies with other groups at the Department of Biology such as Environmental toxicology (e.g study of pollution impacts), Cell and Molecular Biology, Physiology (metabolism, stressors, etc.) and Biodiversity studies will be considered a benefit.
The Department of Biology focuses on developing integrated research groups where researchers within related fields can establish strong research and teaching units both within the different research groups, but also with other research groups at the department and NTNU. The staff of the Marine Sciences group co-operates with scientists across the Department of Biology, as well as many other NTNU Faculties, with particularly strong ties to the Department of Marine Technology and Department of Biology´s Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratory (AUR-Lab). The new faculty member will be expected to take an active part in the further development of cross disciplinary research at NTNU. Ability to develop or use ecological sensors on instrument carrying platforms (e.g., autonomous surface- and underwater vehicles, aerial drones, or mini-satellites) will be considered a benefit.
The employed candidate will be integrated in the Marine Sciences group with an office and laboratories at Trondhjem Biological Station (TBS) and will report to the Head of Department.

Duties of the position
As a new member of the Marine Sciences group, you will:
- Initiate new research in zooplankton ecology using in-situ observations with questions relating to environment-organism dynamics, population or community dynamics, food web structuring, biological-physical coupling, or other relevant marine ecology topics.
- Take part in interdisciplinary research collaborations, both within the Marine Sciences group, with other researchers at the Department of Biology, across NTNU, and with national and international partners.
- Engage in applications for external funding from e.g., the Research Council of Norway, European research and educational agencies, and other available resources.
- Participate in the further development of the Marine Sciences group and Department of Biology.
- Teach in the above-mentioned study programs, including supervision of PhD and MSc fellows.

You must have the qualifications required for the position of associate professor in the field of biological oceanography, within zooplankton ecology, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.
- Your PhD, or academic work, must be within biological oceanography or related field, with documented background in zooplankton ecology.
- Research experience in relevant marine ecology topics relying on use of in-situ observations.
- You must have a minimum of two years of internationally competitive, relevant research experience in addition to your PhD.
- You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and/or supervision at university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
- New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment are required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three (level B2) of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
- Demonstrated ability to attract external funding from national and/or international funding agencies related to the research area.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct internationally competitive research related to e.g. environment-organism dynamics, population or community dynamics, food-web structuring, biological-physical coupling, that will build on the work within the Marine Sciences and other sections of the Department of Biology.
- Ability for interdisciplinary activities and collaborations, including ability to develop or use ecological sensors on instrument carrying platforms (e.g., autonomous surface- and underwater vehicles, aerial drones, or mini-satellites) or moorings.
- Hands-on field and ocean-going experience.
- Ambitious and highly motivated to develop internationally competitive research, attract external funding, and contribute to the development of the department’s teaching plans.

Salary and conditions
A position as an Associate Professor (code 1011) will be remunerated according to the Basic Agreement for the Civil Service, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
