Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is looking for a distinguished, innovative and dynamic scholar to lead the Faculty of Science.

The University's ambitious Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-2028 sets the research direction to transform HKBU into a reputable international powerhouse for research and teaching excellence.

The University currently has an academic and teaching staff strength of about 1,000 and a student population of over 12,000. We offer a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through the Faculties/Schools of Arts, Business, Creative Arts, Chinese Medicine, Communication, Science, Social Sciences and Continuing Education.

In Mainland China, the University has successfully pioneered the establishment of a modern liberal arts college, BNU-HKBU United International College, jointly with Beijing Normal University. To further strengthen research collaborations with Mainland universities, the University has set up a number of research centres/institutes such as the Institute of Research and Continuing Education in Shenzhen.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty strives to play a leading role in science education and technological advancement by delivering excellence in teaching and learning, conducting cutting-edge academic research, and proactively contributing to the advancement of society. It comprises five academic departments (viz. Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics), and it offers educational programmes that are relevant to the needs of Hong Kong and the wider region.

A State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis (a highly prestigious and specialised laboratory generously funded at a national level) and other specialised research centres have been established in the Faculty to facilitate research activities at the University and provide consultancy to the community.

Over time, the Faculty has emerged as a strong and positive influence in scientific education and research. Today, the Faculty has more than 420 staff, 2,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 16,000 alumni, many of whom have earned stellar reputations for their excellence in research, teaching and learning, community engagement and other achievements. Role of the Dean

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean oversees and leads the Faculty in delivering its teaching and research initiatives, in nurturing its students and young scholars, in facilitating interdisciplinary research, and in engaging with local and international communities. The Dean is expected to lead the strategic development of the Faculty to contribute significantly to the University's determination to become an institution of global standing.

The Appointee

The appointee should be a visionary leader and distinguished scholar who will steer the development of the Faculty, provide effective leadership, inspire excellence and ensure the highest academic standards in teaching and research. The successful applicant will foster strong academic partnerships and collaborations internally and externally through joint projects and new initiatives. He/she will also be responsible for planning and monitoring both financial and human resources in the Faculty, and leading the Faculty in the solicitation of research grants. The appointee will work closely with senior management of the University and other Deans of Faculties/Schools in planning the strategic development and setting the overall direction of the University. While the Deanship position will demand significant time commitment to administrative duties, it is expected that the appointee will hold a concurrent academic appointment in the Faculty and contribute to teaching, research, and other scholarly activities.

He/she should have a proven successful track record of academic leadership and an ability to administer a large academic unit. Excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills are necessary.

Appointment Terms

The appointment will normally be made on a three-year term and it is renewable subject to review and mutual agreement. We offer an attractive remuneration package with competitive pay and excellent benefits.
