The Department of Ancient History, Papyrology and Epigraphy is looking to fill the position of an University Assistant Post Doc in the field of Etruscology and Pre-Roman Italy Studies. The position is advertised for 40 hours/week (100%) for a period of six years and should ideally be filled as soon as possible.
Your position:
Your future workplace will be at the Department of Ancient History, Papyrology and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna. In this department, the history of the Mediterranean world and Europe from the beginning of written tradition to Late Antiquity is researched and taught. The department is characterized by a high level of professional and methodological diversity as well as internationality.
In addition to independent research in the fields of Etruscology and Pre-Roman Italy Studies, you will carry out important tasks in the teaching of ancient history and the academic administration of the department. The department is part of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies.
Your future tasks:
You actively participate in the research, teaching and administration of the department, which means:
- You independently teach courses (4 hours per week per semester) in accordance with the teaching needs of the Department of Ancient History.
- You will be responsible for student supervision and examination work in the bachelor's and master's programs in Ancient History.
- You conduct active research in the field of Etruscology and Pre-Roman Italy Studies.
- You are working on a habilitation project in this subject area with the aim of completing it.
- You take part in national and international conferences, meetings and symposiums and publish your research results.
- You will participate in the organization of scientific events as well as in the administrative processes of the department and in committee work within the faculty.
- You will be actively involved in applying for third-party funded projects.
This is part of your personality:
- You have completed a doctorate/PhD degree in Classical Studies.
- You have in-depth knowledge of Etruscology and Pre-Roman Italy Studies and have completed qualification works in this area.
- You have proven knowledge of both Latin and Ancient Greek at least to an intermediate level (equivalent to German-Austrian Latinum and Graecum, respectively).
- You have solid experience of several years in independent teaching (including excursions), in supervising students and you are flexible in terms of the courses offered. Based on your training, you must be able to offer general courses in Ancient History.
- Experience in organizing workshops and meetings.
- You have good knowledge of university processes and structures.
- Knowledge of modern languages: very good knowledge of spoken and written German (proof required), very good knowledge of Italian, good knowledge of English. Desirable: knowledge of French.
- You have a high level of teamwork and communication skills.
- You have very good expressive skills (oral and written).

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 4,351.90 brutto (14 times a year) for a period of six years and increases if we can credit professional experience.
