A research technician position is available in the group of Prof Phil Williamson at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Southampton. The Williamson groups research is centred on the development and application of solid-state NMR methods to study the molecular processes that underpin health and disease. Research in the group currently focusses on two key areas: elucidating the events that lead to the onset and development of neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease, and understanding the chemical properties that determine the uptake of drugs into cells. The successful application will work as part of a dynamic, collaborative interdisciplinary team supporting research into these areas.
The selected candidate will be a highly motivated individual who will be expected to work alongside and support post-doctoral fellows, research scientists and graduate students within the group. The candidate will ideally have experience in the production and isolation of recombinant proteins and have knowledge and/or willingness to learn about their characterisation through a range of biophysical methods, including NMR. Our group aims to provide an exciting and supporting environment in which the candidate will be encouraged to continue to develop their research skills.
Candidates should have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 and ideally have a minimum of 2 years’ experience acquired in relevant laboratory technical support roles and job-related training. The role requires you to be able to plan and organise your workload, communicate effectively with other people within the laboratory, and have good IT skills with which to assist with the acquisition and analysis of data. A scientific knowledge in biological/chemical sciences equivalent to a BSc/MSc is desirable.
In the first instance this is position will be a 50% appointment for a period of 1.5 years
This post is suitable for a motivated technician looking to support an interdisciplinary programme of research and is keen to develop their skills in the field of Biochemistry and Biophysics.
