The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a PROFESSOR or ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF STATISTICS

starting from 1 August 2024 or as agreed.

The appointee is expected to conduct active research in statistics at a high international level, and to take advantage of national and international funding opportunities to build and support a research group at the Department. Research expertise in computational statistics and related mathematical theory is considered an advantage. The appointee will be responsible for developing teaching in the fields of computational statistics and data science, acting as an interface between these fields.

In terms of teaching, the area of the position should be understood in a broad sense, and the applicant’s capacity and willingness to contribute to diverse teaching needs of the Department is considered in the evaluation. The expected amount of course teaching (including both Master and Bachelor level topics) is 10 ECTS credits per year as Assistant Professor, 15 credits per year as Associate Professor, and 20 credits per year as Professor, where 5 credits typically correspond to a 7-week course of 4 hours of lectures each week. The person will also supervise bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses, serve as a tutor, and participate in relevant administrative functions and in the interaction between science and society at large.


An assistant or associate professor must hold a doctoral degree in Statistics or other relevant discipline and have demonstrated ability for independent scientific work as well as teaching skills required by the position. A successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by publications and other academic activities. A professor must, in addition, have high-level academic qualifications and experience in leading scientific research, be able to provide research-based teaching and supervise dissertations and theses, as well as present evidence of international cooperation in the field. When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value as well as teaching experience.

Furthermore, attention will be paid to the applicant's activities within the research community, success in obtaining research funding, international research experience, and activity in scientific organisations.

We expect fluent English skills and proficiency in Finnish is a strong advantage. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire advanced level skills (CEFR level B2; within five years after the appointment. The University will support the appointee in acquiring the necessary Finnish language skills.

Salary and benefits

Annual gross salary for an assistant professor amounts to approximately 55,000–63,000 euros, and for an associate professor to approximately 60,000–70,000 euros. For a professor, a typical range is 70,000–90,000 euros.

The contracts for assistant and associate professors have a fixed term of 3–5 years, towards the end of which an evaluation is made concerning possible promotion to the next level. Assuming a successful evaluation at the end of the associate professorship, a promotion to full professorship is made.
