Applications are invited for a permanent post of a Digital Preservation Librarian within UCD Library.
The mission of UCD Library is to be a leader in enriching the student experience, to empower global engagement, and to act as an intellectual centre for the UCD community.
UCD Library consists of five libraries, UCD Archives and the National Folklore Collection. UCD Library provides library and information services to UCD staff and students. UCD Archives, Special Collections and the National Folklore Collection at UCD house collections of national importance for use by the UCD community and external researchers.
We offer a unique and exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to fill the Library's first post dedicated to digital preservation. The person appointed will lead on defining and documenting the Library's digital preservation policies and workflows and will contribute to the development and implementation of the Library's digital preservation strategy for both digitised and born-digital materials, in order to achieve the goals of the Library Strategy to ensure a wide range of digital content including our national heritage and the knowledge and data produced by researchers is preserved and accessible for current and future generations
Enhancing the Library's capacity to secure the long-term preservation and access to a wide range of digital content, will require appropriate digital preservation technologies and infrastructure and the person appointed will advise on best practice and review options available. The Library is currently developing a business case for an appropriate digital preservation system and infrastructure and the person appointed will support a project to select, configure and implement a solution. The Digital Preservation Librarian will be responsible for developing over time digital preservation policies and practices, including the application of risk management techniques for a wide range of digital content in multiple formats, supporting the Library and the wider University as appropriate.
The Digital Preservation Librarian will identify and build relationships with staff in the Library and wider University who can help support digital preservation, and will raise awareness of digital preservation issues and activities The successful candidate will join a team of librarians, archivists and information technology professionals active in building digital collections through digitisation, and born-digital acquisitions, and in building and managing digital repository environments to support these collections.
The successful candidate will be joining the Collections and Digital Services Directorate in a period of change. The person appointed will demonstrate an enthusiasm for the changing information landscape and the ongoing development of library services including the implementation of new processes and services. This post offers great scope for an individual to provide leadership in the development of this important and evolving area. There will be some opportunities for skills development specific to this post and also in related areas to support the overall goal to advance and accelerate our capacity to preserve and make accessible digital content.
95 Assistant Librarian I\2010 Salary Scale: €54,532 - €65,549 per annum
Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines
