Senior Lecturer / Reader in Advanced Clinical Practice Education
This is an outstanding opportunity for a talented individual who wishes to advance excellent and innovative education. We are seeking an individual to be part of the interprofessional leadership team for the accredited MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) programme, an established and highly evaluated programme. The MSc Advanced Clinical Practice supports healthcare professionals to progress to senior practice roles online with the NHS England Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice by providing skills and knowledge around the four pillars of advanced practice.
The focus of the role is to deliver outstanding education with a focus on the Advanced Assessment and Applied Pathophysiology modules on the ACP programme. The Advanced Assessment module runs three times each year to a multi-disciplinary cohort and for those interested it is also delivered as part of our partnership with Ngee Academy, Singapore. The successful candidate will also be pivotal in supporting advanced skills development and education in the pre-registration Undergraduate and Postgraduate curriculums.
We are seeking applications from a range of healthcare professionals who work in advanced clinical practice roles including: physiotherapists, paramedics, pharmacists, nurses and midwives.

It includes the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation – the premier Institute for Palliative Care, bringing together clinical, research and education teams.

This is a full time post, however, we offer flexibility for part time working. For example, for those who want to maintain their clinical practice.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract pending successful completion of probation (3 years). The post-holder is required to actively participate in academic performance development review (PDR) annually. This will be an Academic Education Pathway contract which is 80% teaching.
- Play an active role in NMPC and King’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, focussed on the programmes, especially educational content outlined above and below. This will include module and programme leadership, developing and delivering high quality innovative and inclusive education and education and relevant materials, including incorporating King’s and Faculty research, pastoral support, supervision, and assessment and generating excellent student success and feedback
- Have a clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing NMPC education, MSc/PhD supervision consistent with our strategy, including to increase research / evidence informed education, multi- and interdisciplinary endeavours, digital offerings and improved student success and experience
If Reader (AEP) above plus
- Have clear strategy for the evaluation of the ACP programme and programme initiatives including generation of grant income
- Develop and implement a clear and collaborative plan with NHS partners, and other organisations to address the issues for advanced practice in light of the NHS Workforce Plans
- Contribute to debates on educational policies at national level through active membership of professional associations, membership of policy and regulatory groups including internal and external consultancy
Main other responsibilities
- Deliver outstanding, inclusive education for relevant programmes based on best evidence, health policy and research
- Actively participate in, and where appropriate plan and lead relevant modules and teaching programmes at King’s, with a strong focus on excellent student experience, seeking opportunities for efficiencies with other modules and programmes
- Communicate and work in partnerships with students, patients, families, the public, policy makers and clinical colleagues and in research and teaching, and its relevance to care and policy.
- Work in collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, institutions, and organisations
- Actively participate in marking, course and programme development, assessment, module leadership, personal tutoring, project supervision as appropriate
- Proactively communicate and collaborate with research and teaching staff within the Faculty, across the University, and where appropriate lead collaborative developments
- Actively engage in Patient and Public Involvement and imbed Patient and Public Involvement into all research projects and teaching endeavours
- Engage with the media, press, publicity, policy makers, practitioners, and others to deliver impact of the research and teaching to the benefit of patients, families, and society.
- Play a broader role in the Faculty, contributing to the growth and development of our people and the wider organisation as appropriate to role
- Actively participate in relevant audit and clinical governance activity, including audit of research and teaching activity, and team building activities
- Champion, model and uphold King’s values and principles, and maintain highest standards of adherence to data protection, ethical and research governance principles and practices
- Have and maintain an honorary contract if required, Good Clinical Practice in research, and complete all mandatory training
- Undertake relevant professional development in negotiation with line manager and PDR discussions.
- Act as a personal tutor for postgraduate and undergraduate students
If a registered nurse, act as a Link Lecturer and Academic Assessor
Scholarship (20% time):
- Actively collaborate with Faculty research themes to enhance research informed education and evidence-based practice
- Act as a collaborator to design innovations or projects to enhance research and integration with education
- Act as a co-applicant on one successful application for funding, which can involve working with research teams in the Faculty, or for an educational innovation or improvement
- Design, implement and review innovations or projects to enhance educational provision, plus a first author publication each year.
If Reader (AEP) above plus:
- Lead on collaborative engagement and innovation with students or practice partners to lead to measurable improvements in education provision, evidenced by winning relevant education grants, teaching awards and/or completed evaluations
- Leadership or a co-applicant on one application for funding, which involve working with research teams
- Application and award of externally funded research and high quality outputs to enhance the interconnection between education and research
- The design, implementation and review of innovations or projects to enhance educational provision

Skills, knowledge and experience
- Registration as a nurse with the NMC, a registered healthcare professional with HCPC, General Pharmaceutical Council; other international equivalence, by the start of employment
- Evidence of a senior clinical role in relation to advanced practice in an acute or community setting and experience of the planning and delivering high quality evaluated education at undergraduate and, postgraduate levels with a strong focus on a high quality student experience and success. If a Senior Lecturer, evidence of leadership in education and assessment initiatives
- Evidence of commitment to continued development in evidence based practice, research methods and evidence relevant to care, with up-to-date knowledge, skills and accomplishments, able to supervise MSc and undergraduate student projects and critically appraise a wide range of relevant research, including data presentation and basic analysis
- Ability to work well as an effective member of teams and networks and to share and encourage good practice in teaching and research and to inspire and motivate others, including in challenging environments. If a Senior Lecturer, also evidence of successful team staff development. The applicant should have an emergent understanding of the range of work underway in the Faculty and across King’s, to enhance this team work
- Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, in all formats, face to face, presentation, email, reports, written and for teaching. If a Senior Lecturer, evidence of developing this in others
- Excellent administrative and organisational skills, underpinned by strong interpersonal skills and personal effectiveness, able to deliver high quality work and projects to deadlines, work efficiently and prioritise appropriately, and take individual responsibility for planning and undertaking work
- Commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity for staff and students
- MSc in Advanced Practice
- In depth understanding of education methods and approaches, including emerging digital learning, extensive evidence of educational innovation and leadership in achieving student success, with published evaluation of achievements or other relevant publications
- Proven commitment to innovation and student learning in education, to support student wellbeing, and enabling students’ personal and professional development, and providing academic advice and pastoral support
- Evidence of strong publication history including acting as first or last author on two papers for a relevant professional or academic journal or book chapter in the last three years
- A major education related leadership role with evidence of improvement in student experience
Essential post-specific criteria
- Evidence of a senior clinical role in relation to advanced practice in an acute or community setting
- PhD or equivalent
- Experience of participating and leading quality improvement projects, audits or service evaluations in clinical practice
- Experience of innovative and effective approaches to teaching, including distance learning, blended learning, digital learning and or simulation which can be virtual and face to face, with appropriate training completed
- Experience of co-leading or leading education activities or clinical service
- Experience of teaching relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching, and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse backgrounds.
- Experience of course development, with creative approaches to assessment and providing robust, developmental and constructive feedback at undergraduate, postgraduate levels

The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview. Scheduling of presentations will be confirmed once shortlisting has taken place.
