About the National Art School

The National Art School (NAS) is Australia’s leading art school with a progressive agenda for growth and a firm commitment to continuing studio-based education. NAS is an independent, fully accredited Higher Education Institution utilising our independent identity and distinctive studio-based teaching model to deliver exceptional higher education and research, scholarship and professional practice that positions us at the forefront of learning, creativity, and innovation.

NAS offers degree courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), Master of Fine Art (MFA) and Doctor of Fine Art (DFA). These degree courses offer studio specialisations in the fields of Ceramics, Painting, Photomedia, Printmaking and Sculpture. Art History & Theory is delivered as a core subject within the BFA and MFA program, with Drawing delivered as a core subject throughout the BFA and offered as a studio specialisation at postgraduate level.

In addition to these degree programs, NAS offers NESA accredited short courses for High School students and a comprehensive range of non-award short courses in all studio areas.

NAS has been established as a State Significant Organisation (SSO) by the NSW government which has provided ongoing certainty of tenure on our heritage campus in Darlinghurst and the foundation upon which to build our continuing success as a leading independent art school.

Degree Courses

NAS delivers accredited degree courses in Fine Arts, focusing on practice-based learning in key studio study areas of: Ceramics, Painting, Photomedia, Printmaking and Sculpture. Specialised study in these studio areas is supported by core study in Art History & Theory and in Drawing, which is offered in all years of the undergraduate degree and as a specialised area of study at postgraduate level.

Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA)

Our three-year BFA is designed to impart the skills, knowledge and creative independence required to sustain a successful career as a contemporary artist and arts professional. The BFA integrates three essential areas of study including: Studio Practice, Drawing and Art History & Theory.

Master of Fine Art (MFA)

The MFA is a two-year full-time degree designed for graduates who seek to develop a higher level of specialised knowledge and further their professional expertise within their area of studio practice. The course involves a blend of coursework with individual research and studio practice under the direct supervision of experienced professional artists.

Doctor of Fine Art (DFA)

The three-year DFA program – our highest-level degree – is a practice-based professional doctorate that provides a platform for integrating professional expertise and scholarly enquiry within the visual arts. This unique offering provides an important alternative to conventional PhD research for practising professionals who are committed to the highest standards of professional practice and critical enquiry through visual art.

The Position

The Head of Postgraduate Studies is responsible for the development and co-ordination of the Postgraduate Studies programs and curricula at the National Art School.

What you bring to the role

The Head of Postgraduate Studies will bring a substantial experience of practice-based research and study in the Fine Arts and capacity to lead the continued evolution and delivery of Postgraduate programs at NAS.

In keeping with minimum standards for Academic Levels under the Australian Higher Education – Academic Staff – Award 2020, staff employed at this level can normally be expected to make original and innovative contributions to the advancement of scholarship, research and teaching in their discipline.
