We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Research Engineer to join our research team and provide support and management for a soccer robotics project. In this role, you will play a critical role in developing and maintaining the robot system, overseeing programming and electronics aspects, and collaborating with students involved in the project. Your expertise in programming, electronics, and robotics will be essential in ensuring the success of the project.
- Robot System Development: Collaborate with the project team to design and develop the soccer robot system. This includes selecting and integrating hardware components, designing electronics systems, and implementing necessary modifications for optimal performance.
- Programming: Develop and maintain software modules for the soccer robot system. This involves implementing algorithms for perception, motion planning, control, and decision-making, as well as integrating different software components for seamless operation.
- Electronics Design: Design and implement electronic circuits and systems for the robot, including motor control, sensors, and communication interfaces. Ensure the robustness and reliability of the electronics system, troubleshooting and resolving any issues that may arise.
- Technical Support: Provide technical support to team members, including researchers and students, in programming and electronics-related tasks. Offer guidance and troubleshooting assistance to ensure smooth operation of the robot system.
- Project Management: Assist in project management tasks, such as coordinating and scheduling activities, tracking progress, and ensuring deadlines are met. Collaborate with the project lead to allocate resources effectively and manage project budgets.
- Student Collaboration: Work closely with students involved in the project, providing guidance, training, and support in programming, electronics, and robotics. Foster a collaborative and productive environment for student learning and development.
- Testing and Evaluation: Collaborate with the research team to design and conduct experiments to evaluate the performance of the soccer robot system. Assist in data collection, analysis, and interpretation to drive system improvements.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of system designs, modifications, and troubleshooting procedures. Prepare technical reports and contribute to research papers and project documentation.
- Drive practices and metrics, which ensure that the laboratories operate in compliance with all aspects of Khalifa University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies.
- Ensure Research lab equipment is operational to the maximum extent possible and improve operations through efficient use of existing equipment.
- Design and fabricate systems for experimental purposes.
- Supervise the management of supply and parts inventory, manage the inventory of commonly used lab supplies.
- Advise the faculty and researchers purchase consumables and accessories for equipment.
- Manage the technical aspects of the request for quotation with spare parts approved suppliers and vendors.
- Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field from a reputable university.
- Technical Skills: Strong programming skills, with proficiency in languages such as Python, C++, or Java. Experience with robotics frameworks (e.g., ROS) and version control systems (e.g., Git) is highly desirable. Familiarity with embedded systems and microcontrollers is a plus.
- Robotics and Electronics Expertise: Solid understanding of robotics principles and concepts, with hands-on experience in building and modifying robotic systems. Experience in electronics design, circuitry, and troubleshooting is essential.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines. Experience in coordinating projects, allocating resources, and tracking progress is advantageous.
- Collaboration and Mentorship: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members and students. Ability to provide guidance, support, and mentorship to students in a research environment.
- Problem-solving: Analytical and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues. Proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges in the development and operation of the robot system.
- Passion for Robotics: Enthusiasm for robotics and autonomous systems, with a particular interest in soccer robotics. Knowledge of soccer strategies and dynamics is a plus.
- Masters gained from and/or experience working in a top 200 QS or THE ranked University
- At least 2 years of increasingly accountable relevant experience in a research lab environment in an equipment/facility support role (academia or industry)
- Experience contributing to high impact publications in the relevant field
