The Research Program Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki invites applications for a fixed-term, full-time Doctoral Researcher position.

The position is available from October 2023, with flexibility on the starting date, and extends until August 2027.

The Chen’s research group at University of Helsinki is seeking a motivated doctoral researcher to contribute to a core project funded by the Academy of Finland. The project aims to investigate the role of RNA splicing and tissue environment in shaping human macrophage diverse phenotypes during obesity. In this study, we will use cutting-edge single-cell and spatial omics technologies, develop novel computational methods, perform multimodal data analysis and integration, and experimental validation to uncover key factors steering the progression of obesity-associated metabolic disorders. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in computational data analysis and method development. Individuals with a strong interest and background in computational biology/bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

Qualifications

Eligibility requires a master’s degree in computational biology/bioinformatics or a relevant field. Proficiency in programming and a fervent curiosity to employ data science in deciphering biological mechanisms of human diseases are imperative. Candidates should exhibit adeptness in both independent work and collaborative team settings across diverse disciplines. Motivation, excellent time management, and effective communication skills in spoken and written English stand as essential attributes. Additionally, familiarity with immunology, metabolism, and RNA biology will be advantageous.

The starting salary will be set on level 2 of the national salary scale for teaching and research personnel at Finnish universities. In addition, salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The starting salary will be in the range of 2300-2600 euros/month (pre-tax). A six-month trial period will be applied.
