Level A $75,888 - $102,040 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.
A fixed-term position is available with a contract length of 14 months. Flexible work arrangements can be negotiated with the right candidate.
Be part of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, the largest computer vision and machine learning research group in Australia.
This Postdoctoral Research Fellow position will work on both theoretical and practical applications of classical image processing as well as computer vision using state of the art machine learning methods and tools. The fellow will be supervised by Professor Tat-Jun Chin, SmartSat CRC Professorial Chair and Defence Space Technologies lead for the Defence Trailblazer: Concept to Sovereign Capability. The role is comprised of two projects which will utilise complementary skills and domain knowledge.
The ARC Discovery Project, New paradigms of kernelisation and polyhedral search, is developing new robust algorithms to mitigate the shortcomings of unreliability (due to randomisation) and computational cost (due to exhaustive search). The research fellow will investigate two new paradigms of kernelisation and polyhedral search, which can offer theoretical insights into the problem. The outcomes will contribute towards computer vision applications that are both more practical and more reliable.
The other project work falls within an industry partnership with an international space start-up. The industry partner operates in the space situational awareness market and is active in the detection of artificial satellites and space debris, their tracking, cataloguing, and collision risk prediction. The research fellow will develop further knowledge in the utilisation of streak detection and automatic orbit determination from streaks with machine learning algorithms.
The tasks of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will include:
- Adapting algorithms to optical parameters and image sensor parameters, for example.
- Scaling up the algorithm for processing large-scale data.
- Tuning of the hyperparameters for specific operation regimes.
Outputs will include:
- Develop robust algorithms and novel methods, either by synthesis of existing models or by constructing a model that is specifically adapted to the projects.
This exciting role will contribute to the Australian Institute for Machine Learning’s objectives to be global leaders driving research excellence, industry translation, and the training of future leaders in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision.
To be successful you will need:
- A completed or nearly completed PhD in computer science or a closely related discipline.
- Completion of at least four (4) years of tertiary study in a science or engineering discipline, or equivalent qualifications or research experience.
- Experience and demonstrable knowledge in computer vision or in related computer science topics.
- Programming experience and expertise in Python or languages such as Linux OS, C++, .NET, and Java, and one or more relevant deep learning libraries and ML platforms such as PyTorch or Tensorflow, Scikit learn, or CARET
- Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a professional and collegial manner, and to build rapport with all levels of academic and professional staff within a diverse and inclusive work environment
- A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners.
It is desirable that you have:
- A track record of publications in top-tier machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity.
