The School of Engineering is one of the most research-intensive Schools within the University. The School consists of four discipline groupings: Civil and Environmental Engineering and Surveying; Chemical and Renewable Energy Engineering; Electrical and Electronic, Computer Systems and Medical Engineering; Aerospace Systems, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. The School is home to many leading-edge research centres and has strong links with industry through sponsored undergraduate students and research collaborations.

The School is highly research active, contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the CESE. This is reflected in the 2018 Excellence in Research in Australia outcomes where Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Resource Engineering codes all received an ERA5.

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer with a passion for teaching in specialist areas related to medical devices and technologies covering electronics, robotics and mechatronics; actuation, control and automation; signal processing and imaging. The successful candidate will have a proven record of developing and implementing high-quality, safe and inclusive learning environments for students using adaptive and innovative teaching methods. You will have demonstrated ability to engage and network with external organisations to secure research funding and to assist industry in solving highly complex technical problems. 

The essential criteria for success include:

  • PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Medical or Biomedical Engineering or a PhD in Electrical or Electronics engineering with significant research experience in the medical engineering field.
  • Demonstrated record of high-quality contribution to research, particularly in application areas such as medical diagnostics and imaging, surgical devices and procedures, biomedical and wearable devices, assistive technologies, therapeutic devices and analytical instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated recent record of successfully leading funding initiatives and obtaining competitive external research funding.
  • Demonstrated recent successful and active supervision of honours and masters research projects as well as Higher Degree by Research students leading timely completion as the primary supervisor.
  • Demonstrated recent record of high-quality scholarly teaching across different levels and contexts with expertise in specialist areas related to medical devices and technologies with a particular focus on aspects of electronics, robotics and mechatronics; actuation, control and automation; signal processing and imaging.
  • Demonstrated ability to make strong contribution to the governance of the University, including successful mentoring of more junior academic staff, leading and forming strategic partnerships between the University and industry/government and other stakeholders.

How will we inspire you?

Reporting to Professor Dianne Wiley, Dean and Head of School Engineering, the successful candidate will provide vision and leadership in the medical/biomedical engineering field and foster excellence in research, teaching and professional activities.

The Medical Engineering program offers majors in Medical Devices (which builds on a basis in electrical & electronic engineering expertise) and Medical Biomechanics (which builds on a basis in mechanical engineering expertise). The region offers many exciting opportunities for research and industrial collaboration including with developers and manufacturers of medical devices and products as well as end-users in medical and allied health organisations.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Sustained and significant research performance to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students to the discipline.
  • Attracting and managing industry-based research support and competitive external grant funding.
  • Enhance student learning and experience by delivering a relevant curriculum.
  • Contribute to teaching and/or teaching development in the broader area of Medical and Electrical Engineering, especially including HDR student supervision.

What we offer

This position will be offered as a level C, continuing/permanent position.

The remuneration range is from $126,446 - $145,803 + 17% superannuation and leave loading.
