The School of Engineering is one of the most research-intensive Schools within the University. The School consists of four discipline groupings: Civil and Environmental Engineering and Surveying; Chemical and Renewable Energy Engineering; Electrical and Electronic, Computer Systems and Medical Engineering; Aerospace Systems, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. The School is home to many leading-edge research centres and has strong links with industry through sponsored undergraduate students and research collaborations.

The School is highly research active, contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the CESE. This is reflected in the 2018 Excellence in Research in Australia outcomes where Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Resource Engineering codes all received an ERA5.

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer with a passion for teaching in specialist areas related to civil/environmental/geospatial engineering and surveying/remote sensing. The successful candidate will have a proven record of developing and implementing high-quality, safe and inclusive learning environments for students using adaptive and innovative teaching methods. You will have demonstrated ability to engage and network with external organisations to secure research funding and to assist industry in solving highly complex technical problems. 

The essential criteria for success include:

• A PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Civil/Environmental Engineering or Surveying/Remote Sensing or related fields.
• Demonstrated record of high-quality contribution to research, particularly in application areas including advanced structural analysis and design; sustainable and reliable development and rejuvenation of on-shore and off-shore infrastructure; adaptation and transformation of infrastructure, be it urban, coastal and rural resources.
• Demonstrated recent record of successfully leading funding initiatives and obtaining competitive external research funding.
• Demonstrated recent successful and active supervision of honours and masters research projects as well as Higher Degree by Research students leading timely completion as the primary supervisor.
• Demonstrated recent record of high-quality scholarly teaching across with expertise related to structural design, analysis and modelling; management and treatment of water resources; water engineering design; transportation engineering; sustainable engineering practice; managing project complexity, chaos and big data; the role of digital technologies infrastructure and resource management.
• Demonstrated ability to make strong contribution to the governance of the University, including successful mentoring of more junior academic staff, leading and forming strategic partnerships between the University and industry/government and other stakeholders.

Reporting to Professor Dianne Wiley, Dean and Head of School Engineering, the successful candidate will provide vision and leadership in the civil/environmental/geospatial engineering and surveying fields and foster excellence in research, teaching and professional activities

The Civil Engineering program provides students with critical technical skills in structural engineering, civil engineering materials, geomechanics, water engineering, transport engineering and engineering management. The Environmental Engineering program provides students with critical technical skills in sustainability, water engineering, environmental process technologies underpinned by environmental sciences and engineering principles especially related to geotechnics and hydrogeology. The Surveying program provides students with critical surveying and engineering skills related to local land and mining surveying techniques, spatial data systems, satellite positioning geodesy and remote sensing.

In this role you will be responsible for:

• Sustained and significant research performance to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students to the discipline.
• Attract and manage industry-based research support and competitive external grant funding.
• Enhance student learning and experience by delivering a relevant curriculum.
• Contribute to teaching and/or teaching development in the broader area of Civil/Environmental/Geospatial Engineering and Surveying, especially including HDR student supervision.

What we offer

This position will be offered as a level C, continuing/permanent position.

 The remuneration range is from $126,446 - $145,803 + 17% superannuation and leave loading.
