Applications are invited for a permanent post of a Chief Technical Officer II within UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

The teaching, research, and innovation activities within the UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering involve continuously evolving technologies and a wide variety of customised equipment, components, and experimental systems. The post of Chief Technical Officer will be based in the Manufacturing Workshop and will work (in consultation) with staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students in the design, construction, installation and repair of mechanical equipment, apparatus, related machinery and parts, as well as in various other associated support activities, as required.

The post-holder will act as a specialist lead and will also manufacture routine and bespoke equipment items and parts for both research and teaching laboratories with the use of Lathes, CNC Milling Machines, CNC Lathe, EDM, TIG, MIG, MMA, Guillotines, Drilling Machines, Benders, Band Saws, Grinding Wheels, Welding Equipment and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). The successful candidate will ideally have industrial experience of using CAD/CAM, Mechatronics, Robotics, CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, EDM processing and sensor technologies, and Welding equipment. When required, the Mechanical and Electronics Workshops of UCD's Schools of Mechanical & Materials Engineering (SMME) and Electrical & Electronic Engineering (SEEE) work closely together to design and develop complex solutions for experimental researchers. Experience of other equipment that exists in typical manufacturing workshops and other important skills, including a formal qualification as a Toolmaker, Fitter/Turner, or Metal Fabricator as well as management experience will be an advantage.
