Professor of Parasitology

Workplace: Department of Botany and Zoology, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic

Type of Contract: temporary position with three-year contract (with possible extension), academic

Working Hours: 0.25 FTE (part-time employment of 10 hours per week)

Expected Start Date: negotiable with respect to immigration timelines for non EU candidates

Department of Botany and Zoology is a modern centre of research and teaching in the fields of evolutionary biology, biosystematics and ecology. Its individual research groups study phylogenetic relationships and the classification of organisms, their diversity from the local to the continental level, and the ecological relationships of individual species, populations and communities in relation to both natural and human-induced changes in entire ecosystems.

Job Description

Key Duties:

  • Professor in the field of parasitology specialized in the ecology of fish parasites
  • Preparation and conducting of courses and seminars, guidance of students
  • Performing independent research in the field of fish parasitology
  • Writing coordinating the preparation of scientific publications for international journals
  • Leading grant projects

Skills and Qualifications

The applicant must have:

  • Professor title according to the Czech law in parasitology, zoology or a related field
  • Research focus on fish parasites
  • Experience in teaching parasitology or zoology for bachelor, master or PhD students (at least one semestral course taught for at least five years)
  • Experience in supervising bachelor's, master's or PhD theses, evidenced by at least five defended theses
  • Good knowledge of Czech (or Slovak) and English at a level that allows teaching and writing scientific papers in both languages
  • Active research in parasitology or zoology, evidenced by at least 50 publications in journals indexed on Web of Science (including at least 30 first-author publications)
  • Completed internship abroad (outside the Czech Republic or Slovakia)
  • Experience in leading international scientific studies evidenced by publications
  • Good communication skills, motivation to work with students and scientific research teams in the field of parasitology and/or zoology
