The School of Geography and Environmental Science is seeking a senior environmental sensing technician to provide day-to-day operational leadership of the Environmental Sensing at Southampton (ES@S) facility, which sits within Southampton Geospatial.

ES@S is home to state-of-the-art equipment such as mobile laser scanners, Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, Autonomous Surface Vehicles and MultiBeam Echo Sounders. You will work alongside world leaders in the application and processing of high resolution geospatial survey techniques, leveraging the facility to grow our enterprise and research activity.

The role

You will be responsible for day to day leadership of ES@S, providing technical support and advice on the application and processing of specialist environmental sensing equipment and data. The successful applicant will be familiar with these type of specialist survey tools and moreover able to process the data, creating custom data processing workflows and scripts where necessary. A vital part of the role will involve identifying and engaging with external clients as ES@S seeks to grow its enterprise activities. You will be responsible for organising and undertaking field data collection campaigns in the UK and overseas to support research and enterprise projects.

You will report to the SoGES Technical Manager, who will provide support and guidance in your role and be mentored by the directors of ES@S, Geodata and Southampton Geospatial, providing ample opportunities for continued professional development and involvement in enterprise and research activities. The role is initially fixed term for three years, but we anticipate extending this depending upon performance and success in attracting enterprise activity.

About you

You will have excellent technical and communication skills, with the ability to manage your own workload and specific expertise in some form of survey and environmental sensing techniques. You will be a positive and proactive problem solver with the ability to manage a mixture of field and office based tasks, ranging from deploying Rigid Inflatable Boats to collating quotes and reports for clients. You will be a strong team player, but also be self-sufficient and able to work independently.
