This is a brand new role within our National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Coordinating Centre that will help lead, develop and manage our finance team. You will form part of our expanding senior leadership team to ensure we continue to meet the needs of the NIHR, patients and the public now and in the future. 

Who are we?

The NIHR Coordinating Centre based within the School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation (HEI) is the largest enterprise contract within the University of Southampton.  We help to fund, enable and deliver world-leading research that improves people's health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth. We are also a major funder of applied health research in low and middle income countries.  

What is the role?

The postholder will be responsible for leading the interface for contract financial planning between our contract governance and workforce leads. The postholder will be a member of the contract management and planning executive governance group within the Centre. You will also provide strategic leadership to the finance team to ensure they deliver on contractual obligations and provide a quality service to our stakeholders and ensure University financial practices are adhered to. You will also develop and maintain strategic oversight of our NIHR contract, assess any financial risks and advise on the implications for delivery and future retender. 

What are we looking for?

You will be a CCAB qualified accountant with significant post-qualification experiences. You will have proven experience of managing significant change in complex, national, public sector/government cross-organisational environments and It will be advantageous to have worked in a policy-sensitive environment. Other key skills to be successful in this role include: 

  • Expertise in financial modelling and forecasting
  • Experience of business planning and continuous improvement 
  • Able to work proactively and manage conflicting priorities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to adapt your style to engage with a variety of stakeholders
  • Able to confidently work with and influence senior people of national standing
