Southampton Education School is a flourishing centre of research and teaching excellence. It has a vibrant research community with internationally excellent and world leading impact (REF 2021) and a strong programme of Initial Teacher Education in both primary and secondary PGCE.
We are seeking to appoint an individual who will take an active role in research on and the development of Environmental Sustainability Education in the School, that is, education research on how to teach individuals about the concepts, principles, and practices that promote sustainability and environmental stewardship. The successful applicant will strengthen the existing work of our research centres and foster links with the local community as well as with national and international research partners. The applicant would initiate research projects, craft high quality outputs, and develop funding proposals. This will be instrumental in supporting the School in delivering strategic goals aligned to the University Strategy.
Additionally, the successful applicant would be responsible for teaching and supporting trainee teachers in the curriculum area of Geography. The person appointed would have expertise in Geography education, ideally with recent and relevant secondary teaching experience and who would be able to design and lead the Geography PGCE course, as well as pedagogical sessions in a cross-curricular context. As well as planning and teaching sessions at the University they would also be expected to visit trainees in schools in order to monitor and moderate progress. There would also be an expectation that the appointee would be able to contribute to other areas of Initial Teacher Education and Southampton Education School as required and as appropriate to their skills and experiences.
The Secondary PGCE programmes at the University of Southampton deliver Initial Teacher Education within the University and work in partnership with over 100 local secondary schools. Our programme provides thorough preparation for teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards, while our research-led philosophy develops teachers whose independent and creative approach brings about high quality learning and teaching.
The successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team with colleagues at Southampton Education School. The post includes research, teaching, visiting trainee teachers in their placement school and observing and assessing the quality of their teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards. The role requires liaison with trainees’ mentors in partnership schools and assessing trainees’ work at Masters level. Working in collaboration with colleagues, you will have responsibility for:
- Research in and development of Environmental Sustainability Education within the school and the university.
- Course design, management and teaching in PGCE Geography
- Arranging and participating in observations at trainees’ placement schools in order to observe trainees teaching
- Assessing trainees in their teaching, and in their written assignments
- Maintaining records and paperwork as required
The role will include regular travel to our network of placement schools, and provide opportunities for research conference submissions.
The successful candidate will ideally be in post by 01/09/2023 to ensure a smooth transition before the new academic year, with interviews being held mid May 2023. This position requires DBS Clearance at an enhanced level; this would need to be obtained once the applicant is in post.
