Post-Doctoral Associate in the Division of Engineering, Construction Automation
The S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to recruit a post-doctoral associate to work on automation and information technologies applied to construction and civil infrastructure. The S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group is a dynamic and interdisciplinary research group led by Prof. Borja García de Soto. The core topics of the S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group are Sustainable and resilient construction, Modularization and lean construction, Artificial intelligence, Robotic systems and automation, Technology integration and information modeling.
The successful applicant will lead fascinating projects focusing on the development of innovative ways to automate (including the use of robotic systems) the building, operation, inspection, retrofit, and repair of construction projects, coupled with the application of artificial intelligence and new technologies. The objectives include increasing quality and safety and reducing construction time and costs (i.e., increasing productivity). Automation is mostly intended to be done on-site using autonomous and mobile robotic systems with applicable sensors, controls, and algorithms. The post-doctoral associate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students. The selected post-doctoral associate is expected to continuously document research progress in the form of scientific publications to be submitted to top journals.
Applicants must have received a Ph.D. in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related field and should have research experience in construction automation, building information modeling, automation/robotics, and computational design methods. Candidates are expected to have extensive and strong knowledge of Robot Operating System (ROS) and programming abilities (in C++, C, Python and MATLAB) and experience in robotic applications in real and simulated (Gazebo) environments. Experience in the application of robotics to construction, as well as building information modeling (BIM), will be an advantage. Candidates with excellent interpersonal and communications skills in English, problem-solving, the ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, scientific creativity, and decision-making abilities are preferred.
Applications will be accepted immediately, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, medical insurance, housing allowance, annual home-leave travel, educational subsidies for children, and other benefits.
For consideration, applicants need to submit:
- A cover letter
- Updated curriculum vitae with a full publication list and contact information for at least three references
- A statement of research interests
- Sample relevant publications (if available)
All in PDF format via the interfolio platform. If you have any questions, please email Dr. Borja García de Soto at firstname.lastname@example.org
