Research Funding Development - Social Sciences

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and proactive Research Funding Manager to join the Research Funding Development team in Research and Innovation Services at the University of Southampton.

As Research Funding Manager for the Faculty of Social Sciences, you will be responsible for a portfolio of major funders with whom you will develop relations that will inform our research funding strategy and the development of successful bids.  You will play a key role in supporting our research strategy and work with our academic colleagues in the Faculty of Social Sciences.  You will be responsible for identifying and evaluating key opportunities for research funding and provide expert advice and professional support on the preparation and submission of large and strategic research proposals.   You will also contribute to the development programme of our researchers and lead and facilitate workshops to develop interdisciplinary areas of research.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in research management or research funding – experience of working in the higher education or funding sector would be particularly useful.  You will have specialist knowledge of the research lifecycle, and experience of strategic research funding initiatives.  You will have excellent organisation, planning and time management skills and be able to prioritise your workload when managing a large portfolio of complex projects. You will be able to both work in a team and on your own initiative. Strong interpersonal, organisational and IT skills are essential.

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) support academic and research staff fulfil their research and enterprise objectives by providing expert advice and assistance in research funding, bid support and management, collaborations with industry and other strategic partners as well as the protection and commercialisation of intellectual property.

The University of Southampton is a research-driven institution, home to some of the world’s leading minds, expanding our knowledge, and passing it on to future generations. We are committed to building an inclusive and diverse culture at the University and creating an environment where people can balance successful careers with their commitments and interests outside of work.  Our flexible working practices, including a hybrid working model, where employees can split their working time between the office and home, support our belief that this balance brings long-lasting benefits for our institution as well as our people.

We believe equality and diversity are fundamental to making the University of Southampton a vibrant, proud and successful organisation.  A diverse workforce, with people from different racial, educational and social backgrounds and a range of ages, opens up a wealth of possibilities for Southampton.
