The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applicants to apply for the open Postdoc position in the Project Deep Learning for Robotic Human Augmentation.
CAIR invites qualified applicants with a doctorate degree in the areas of electrical, or computer, or mechanical engineering, or related field to apply. A strong publication record is encouraged and previous experience in areas such as Deep learning, Neurorobotic systems, Assistive technologies, Robotic prostheses, Exoskeletons, Electromyography, and Embedded systems development is desired. The position is open to PhDs with background in robotics, robotic prostheses, AI, and/or controls. The candidate is expected to work in a highly collaborative multi-disciplinary environment with other post-doctoral associates, PhD and undergraduate students, as well as faculty members. It is expected that applicants have a strong publication record in the aforementioned areas. The applicants are also expected to have strong analytical, communication, and writing skills.
The successful applicant will work on several projects including development of methodologies for human motor augmentation using autonomous robotic systems and deep machine learning. This will include development of approaches to decode peripheral response (e.g., using high-density electromyography, i.e., HD-EMG) of the human nervous system using sparse training data for multiple purposes including: (a) immersive interaction with robots in mixed-autonomy and tele-operation applications; (b) intelligent robotic prostheses for neurorehabilitation and human augmentation. As part of this work, the successful applicant will also work on development of prosthetics-based methods to integrate EMG-based human-robot interaction as an additional modality of input to support computer vision for environment perception and tele-operation to enable immersive and embodied control in inaccessible or hostile environments. The algorithmic development will need to take into account various real-world aspects including sensory constraints (both spatial and temporal), sensor noise, and network communication latency. The work will include algorithm design, prototype implementation (e.g., in Matlab/Python), deployment (to embedded computational hardware using the Robot Operating System), and experimental testing (on robotic prosthesis and human-robot interface systems).
A solid competency with the standard implementation tools used in robotic and embedded systems (e.g., C, C++, Linux, MATLAB, Python, Deep Learning software, Robot Operating System) is required.
