Research Associate for the Net Zero Initiative

• Full time, fixed term until 31st December 2026. Located on the Darlington Campus at the Faculty of Engineering

• Base Salary $79,784 - $107,516 (Level A) p.a + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is seeking a Research Associate for the Net Zero Initiative to work with the support and guidance of more senior academic staff to develop their research profile and education proficiency. In particular, the incumbent will contribute towards research undertaken in the research group of the Director of the Net Zero Initiative (Prof. Deanna D'Alessandro).

The Research Associate will assist in the planning and delivery of research in Direct Air Capture and functional electroactive Metal-Organic Frameworks to meet the work area's research objectives and to ensure any commercial milestones are met. Drawing on their deep expertise in research, the incumbent will play an active role in research study and design, plan timelines for the delivery of research milestones, contribute to both IP and research publications, research commercialization and liaise with multiple key stakeholders within the Net Zero Initiative. The incumbent will report on the progress of research (may include reporting to external funding bodies), source grant funding, and collaborate with academics, research, and administration professionals to achieve the goals of the project.

As a subject matter expert, the Research Associate works under the broad direction of the Net Zero Initiative and actively contributes to the achievement of research work carried out by the work unit, working in close collaboration with the Chief Investigator to ensure that the requirements of the research project are addressed appropriately. Together with the Chief Investigator and/or Senior Academic Researchers, the Associate Lecturer develops operational plans for research project(s), impacting the immediate outcomes of the research project(s) they are responsible for. Resolves complex matters related to the research projects they are managing and will typically draw on their extensive research experience to provide sound advice and recommendations, exercise independent judgement and apply extensive professional know-how to achieve their work goals.

About you

• a PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, and demonstrated at least two years of experience collaborating with industry partners
• significant experience in a research-intensive environment, particularly in the discipline of Metal-Organic Frameworks, including the ability to develop and work on research projects, direct student and staff research work, the contribution to intellectual property and academic publications, and the ability to work on grant applications
• demonstrated literacy and familiarisation with university systems and policy, particularly for Work, Health and Safety and Procurement
• excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and achieve required outcomes
• extensive experience in, including expertise in using research protocols and experimental design
• working understanding and current knowledge of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation (including Safe Laboratory Practices for roles based in Laboratory)
• excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating in dealing with day-to-day operational matters
• demonstrated experience in the supervision, training and mentoring of staff and students.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
