About the opportunity

The University's Office of General Counsel (OGC) is leading a best-in-class transformation of our policy framework and documents. We are seeking a Senior Policy Officer to work collaboratively with key stakeholders across the University to provide expert support and assistance in developing, reviewing and curating complex policy documents impacting core business operations. This role will work with policy and document owners and their teams to help them update and manage their suites of policy documents, and improve and develop their policy skills.

In this role you will be part of, and will mentor, a small team of policy professionals supporting a project to improve the management and development of the University's policy framework. The project aims to enable the University to develop and maintain a fit-for-purpose, up to date and user-friendly suite of policy documents to support its operations, legislative compliance and strategic goals. Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • draft, and assist clients to draft, fit-for purpose, current and easy to use policy documents
  • provide expert policy analysis, specialist development and other high-level support to internal clients
  • provide leadership, guidance and support for Policy Officers
  • develop and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with document owners, policy officers and their teams
  • identify and develop opportunities to improve policy drafting, presentation and management
  • together with the Policy and Compliance Law team, identify and develop opportunities to track, report on and improve policy capability across the University
  • assist in preparation of reports to University executive staff and governance committees as required
  • assist with the development and delivery of information sessions or training about policy and its role, the policy framework and the Policy Register.

About you

  • tertiary qualifications in an appropriate discipline
  • expertise in plain language policy writing
  • experience and understanding of the higher education sector
  • experience in supporting and coordinating large strategic projects and initiatives to deliver outcomes within agreed timeframes
  • highly developed communication skills, with the ability to establish and manage positive collegial working relationships and deliver strongly client focused service
  • ability to anticipate, identify and analyse problems, develop options for solutions and provide appropriate and relevant advice to resolve issues
  • strong technical ability with advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • growth mindset, and a willingness to embrace and use new technologies and approaches.
